Installation question

Postby deate » Tue Mar 03, 2009 1:08 pm

As I have never used a printer with linux, I have this question...is it best to install UE2.1 with the USB printer attached from the start, or to wait, until after install to try to get the printer installed??? I'm having problems with a printer i tried to set up on an installation on 1.8, think I borked the x.org??? The only reason I had used 1.8, was it was the only 32 bit version I had at the time...now have 2.1 32bit, so could do a fresh install

deate I should have mentioned there is a huge data base of printers that do work. Do not let the lexmark thing put you off as some of them will work. I installed 2.1 the other day for a friend and the new Kodak 5000 series was recognized during install.Whether it work or not we do not know as it had a defective print head out of the box and would not even work with vister.

Thanks, I've already checked it out, it's a HP C4480, on the list of "works very well" that's why I was confused when it got messed up on an install of 1.8...should have gone a lot smoother??? I'm going to give a shot with a fresh install of 2.1 with it hooked up, if it works, I'll post it in the section of working hardware!

I have a Lexmark E120n, an HP C5180(?), a Lexmark X75, an Okidate B4350N, and an HP 3740 working on my Home and Shop systems (some on one and some on the other). The Lexmark E120n, Oki B4350N and the HP C5180 are all connected vis Ethernet, the rest are USB. I had very little trouble getting them to work using System>Administration>Printing to install all of them.
Actually, My only problem in this area is getting 1.9, 2.0 or 2.1 X64 to recognize my HP ScanJet 5300 scanner - have to use VirtualBox with Xp running to use it. And I need it many times per day. I run an Testing Center for FAA Written Tests, and must keep copies of "IDs and Authorizations" for each student, and each test - minimum of 2 scans per test, and I must keep them "on file" for 24 months, minimum.

Even the turboprint drivers are for printers only and not for the multifunctionals.
