I use Totem xine.
I add the medibuntu repositories from a terminal:
sudo wget http://www.medibuntu.org/sources.list.d/intrepid.list --output-document=/etc/apt/sources.list.d/medibuntu.list press enter
sudo apt-get update && sudo apt-get install medibuntu-keyring && sudo apt-get update press enter
I close the terminal.
I open up Synaptic Package Manager.
I install totem xine and remove totem gstreamer.
I install ubuntu-restricted-extras.
I install libdvdcss2(for dvd playback)
I reboot just in case.
And bingo. I open up totem and all my media plays without a hitch(except cds which I use RhythmBox and karaoke which I use PyKaraoke).
If that doesn't work do a fresh install and start again.

Hello,

I actually had both Totems installed, I have just removed totem gstreamer. The other suggestions I already did before I made the first post. I will reboot and change the startup to allow login, password and see if I get all 3 sounds during startup.

Thanks

They conflict with each other. The installer shouldn't let you install both.

Hello,
I would think so but they were both installed, when I clicked on them my only option was to reinstall or remove. At any rate I did remove the Totem gstreamer, enabled log in and restarted and I only heard the first 2 sounds not the sound when the desktop loads and again I couldn't play any music, got the zine busy error in AMAROK. So I will just do without the login and password. I really have no need for it anyway. I prefer the startup sound at desktop loading better. I don't really want to do the install over again, if I really don't have to. I am on satellite internet and I have used in the downloading of this 2.1 and all the updates, additions 83% of my allowed fairuse bandwidth. Also this isn't my only computer, there are 8 computers in the house, so I need to make sure my wife gets to use her computer this month!

At any rate other than the startup sound issue, the computer is doing what I need it to do. Thanks!

Hello,

I started using 2.1 with the sound area you show above set to auto detect. When I tried fixing the sound problem, I thought maybe this was set wrong and I clicked all of them to Pulse audio, I still had the same sound problem, so I don't think this is area is the problem. Since I noticed that I had both Totem zine and Totem gstream installed at the same time, some how--I don't know how---maybe this caused my problem with the start up sounds??? AT any rate changing the selections didn't make a difference between the 2 I used, I have about 5-6 options showing up in the boxes to select, I didn't try all of them yet. Not sure that any selection would make a difference, at this point???

Thanks

You might try killing pulse audio. I know with one of the releases I had to remove it by hand to get my sound to work properly and it wasn't easy either.
