I don't take any chances. I close all my ports with Linux unless I have something to do. With Windows it's not as easy.

Yup, It's always a good time to choose to upgrade, never a good time to have to replace. Sorry to hear it. :(
The glass is neither half empty nor half full. It is functioning 100% effectively @ 50% capacity. It is approximately 75% efficient. I suggest fitting a lid of some sort.
