Hi

I'm out of my dept here  - but if it's only a test install, worst case is a new install ;)

Google says http://comments.gmane.org/gmane.linux.usb.general/94772 I think that says there is some lines missing in kernelconfig in the newer kernels.

Your configfiles is (as far as I know) in /boot and I presume it must be the config for the newest kernelnumber you'll have to tinker with as root
If it matters where in the file you add the line - I don't know

Remember: It is at your own risk :!: :!:

It may be out of my league too! Might have to move the kernel back to 3.8 or something, don't know but have too many programs in this upcoming OS of mine to toss!Have to figure something and just hoping can get some good ideas together so all thoughts are welcome!

It has to do with your .config file during compilation of a kernel.
If you have a running and stable working system with all your devices working you can copy the current working .config file with:
Code: Select all
zcat /proc/config.gz > new_config

After this run "make menuconfig" and use the "new_config" file...
then compile your kernel as per http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Kernel/Configuration

Thanks very much, Pam! That will help out greatly as am sure some issues will come up in the future. I hope you have read my apology. Am very sorry for getting so excited so fast! I really blew it as forgot about getting linux-image-extra after original command of apt-get dist-upgrade produced a failed install! I re-installed the rest of the kernel and headers and somehow forgot to get that linux-image-extra! So many files to know and understand! Am so looking forward to the completion of this one as thus far have seen hardly any hassles. Am hoping to clear the rest within the next few days. Usually I go through a good dozen of hassles so getting it down to only a few, is to the point I hardly believe it!

Since the very first build of 13.04, I have had major problems closing windows! Sometimes they close when clicked on and other times the ones underneath close instead so gets really frustrating. I am not seeing this behavior in 13.10 so am quite happy! Some things with Gnome are a little different but not so far off than 3.8! Noticed a coloring issue so have to check into that along with a few other things. Least is nothing crucial like something not installing or conflicting so am really grinning on that! Recently(month ago) I downloaded some small distros called Obsidian and Tiny Core. I am very curious about learning to build onto those also! Am loving the fact of getting a full blown OS(All utilities I want) all my games, images and assorted into an install image that is below the size of 4gigs!

Was totally shocked this time around with Ubuntu, that I was able to keep the size down to 3gigs without any of my assorted things inside. Now almost everything I have is in there and is still about 600mbs under 4gigs!!!! Am very very pleased at that point! One gets tired of moving files from here to there when installing an OS! Is so much better when they can all be contained in the image and ready to go when installation completes! So tired of the over 4gigs and still have to put files in! Was so happy to avoid KDE this time as is a hogs space just as much as Gnome does! Am to the point is one or the other and personally I use Gnome the most, so is best to go that way for me! Will also post back with any pertinent information as to help others out there! Building Ubuntu's is never an easy task and one of the most frustrating things to do, when you are not as brilliant as TheeMahn!!!! I think to him is the same like when I butter my toast! Just another small task to do! Enjoy being here with the most intelligent people the internet has to offer!!!!
