System all assembled ready to go, used TheeMahn's ThumbOS worked perfectly set up usb drive in 15 minutes vs normal time of half hour for other programs used! Boot to the desktop and neither mouse or keyboard will work! I guess Ubuntu 13.10 just does not run USB2.0 cause I have every last utility for usb there is and not a damned thing functions for usb!!!!! Talk about ticked! I have spent a week working on this OS, in VBOX runs pretty good. I had to set VBOX to PS/2. Of course on the fallback desktop of Gnome mouse then disappears! I have smoke coming out of my ears as all I can find on the net is unanswered problems! Is apparent no one knows the solution to this! Am starting to think this problem would even beat TheeMahn!!! I hope I am wrong and somebody will finally give me an answer of what to do as I have tried a few cures and nothing works at all!!!!

That's just plain wrong.

USB 2.0 has nothing to do with ubuntu.

USB 3.0 keboard-mouse are not available because there is absolutely NO benefit to using a USB 3.0 keyboard-mouse. The wireline and radio data for keyboard-mouse is very little. USB 2.0 has a max data transfer capacity of 480Mbps whereas USB 3.0 has 5Gbps. Saturating this bandwidth for generic devices like kb/mouse is completely out of league and only a millionth of the capacity of usb 2.0 would be needed. Adding security measures in the course of coming decades would require a completely new standard with latency being of prime importance....

Without the model number of your kb/mouse we really cant help. Im very sure we can help you to the best of our abilities once we have more info. :)

FYI --- PS/2 is way better than USB for keyboards(requiring less CPU usage...)

Logitech M570 mouse and K750 on the Logitech Keyboard. 13.04 had no problem with my mouse or keyboard. I have seen numerous complaints that are unanswered when people claim the exact same thing as I have. So I am assuming Ubuntu simply dropped drivers for usb2.0 and earlier is the only thing that explains it. I compared boot config is the same. So where the problem exists is beyond me! I can use keyboard to get Ubuntu 13.10 to the desktop same goes for mouse. Once it hits the desktop simply does not work! Have seen quite a few posts about this and is unanswered!!!! So looks like Ubuntu 13.10 just can not run any usbs!!!! So it sucks for those of us that have usb hookups. I no longer have PS/2 adapters so am screwed on this one!

I just tried on my laptop got to the desktop and mouse is working off the touchpad. So I guess all 13.10 works for is keyboards and touchpads cause once it gets to anything USB forget it!!!! So should revise my post as UBUNTU 13.10 DOES NOT RUN ANY USB WHATSOEVER!!!!

The M570 has an unresolved bug for a long time:
https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+sour ... bug/958174

From the above link it is stated that -- differing kernel versions have recurring problems whereas some do not. Kernel 3.8 does not but 3.11 does have a bug...
The bug may or may not be related to ubuntu. Best bet is to use another linux distro.

If you are using a unifying receiver this might be helpful:
http://forums.logitech.com/t5/Mice-and- ... d-p/545324

M570 has an uncertain future or the user needs a more twitchy knack to get it working --- through trial and error.

The k750 according to http://www.linux-hardware-guide.com/in/ ... -solar-usb is fully supported.
I dont know how newer kernels fare with this keyboard.
Using usb 3.0 might be a dicey situation...http://logitech-en-amr.custhelp.com/app ... 5/cl/us,en

Some extra info: https://github.com/aheadley/logitech-solar-k750-linux

Ubuntu cant drop usb 2.0 drivers for ubuntu. There is backward compatibility from usb 3.0 to usb 1.0. The entire stack is a common implementation.

Yet best bet is still to try using something else besides ubuntu.

Proves my point that 13.10 just does not run usb and is a major problem that is trying to be burried!!!! If I would have known that I would have never built this one!!!! Is a shame to think Ubuntu can just sweep this under the rug and everyone will just stop crying about it and walk away!!!! I also did log out of Gnome desktop on Laptop and went to the flashback desktop where mouse disappears, so this is a total nightmare for any OS to have that you can not funnction the system!!!! Whoever is designing these Ubuntu systems sure has a screw loose! Am very tipped and really did expect more knowledge and something that aims towards a solution instead of "Oh well, what the hell, it just doesn't work so get another OS that is not Ubuntu!"

Of all the time I have been here at this forum, Pam, this is the first time I have ever seen you walk away from a problem! Does not seem like you at all!!! I have a hard time believing it is you that answered! My mouse worked perfectly since Ubuntu 12.04. Is the 2nd of this type which I bought this past year about 6 months ago, but also had zero issues running it on any Ubuntu OS before this 13.10! Only issues were personal, my poor coordination of accidentally clicking a button I did not mean to! Of course that happens on all devices I have ever been around! So is not considered a real issue!!!

Laptop will not even pick up the internet, so is also a problem! When one works on an OS for a week straight, do you really think they are ready to just leave it???? How about a link that could get me closer to a solution? Everything I get revolves around making a thumbdrive install and we all know the only solution for that is TheeMahn's ThumbOS. Now that baby works like a dream! 15 minutes D O N E!!!! See now that is the real problem I am seeing, wrong people making these Ubuntu's, need someone real like TheeMahn. He thinks!!!! No hatrack there!!! Full of brains and uses them to the full extent! Sorry for sounding so terrible, but when you spend 3 days looking for a solution and keep coming up empty-handed it wears you real thin!

It might sound vague but at this point of time nobody cares for the problems of 13.10 and thats because everyone has their eyes on 14.04LTS.
Yet again it might be an ubuntu problem with usb or it might be a problem with newer kernels.
I dont have any hardware at hand. If i had that would be different situation. I can get any hardware to work on linux provided i have it first hand and there is code for that hardware that exists which can be compiled.

Ofcourse that does not include proprietary firmware and drivers.

You could just plain fallback to 12.04 LTS and install a new kernel there, that way you'd know whether its kernel related.

Unless you are a C coder or work for Canonical and you spend most of your time on github(hobby or not) its pretty much a wash out.

A practical alternative would be to buy a cheaper reliable kb/mouse that "looks" also like you know it will definitely have linux support...most off the shelf Newer hardware should work. Best still ask someone or google search.

Try using Ultimate Edition / Oz Diamond IIB, Im pretty sure you should face no problems --- as a user.
Take a look at distros based on the unstable branch(sid) of debian like solydx and siduction.
Even manjaro can do more than miracles.

Yet still the only way to successfully build a linux distro is by chrooting and debootstraping and using install scripts that many linux distributions have.

Only LTS versions of ubuntu are stable and solid. The non-lts versions are for testing newer standards and technologies...they are by design not supposed to sit on your desktop for long.

I would just download Ultimate and scratch these builds as personally am no pro and should take more time learning things! Of course do not have the luxury of downloading heavier downloads, which makes that impossible! 6 blocks from cable we are and boy is a nightmare! Verizon is good, do not get me wrong. Still when it comes to larger files exceeding 700mbs is a sure guarantee the download will fail! I do not want to use some OS which will not have even half of the programs I want and that is basically the only choice for me right now, besides creating them!

Yes, the support ends on all these systems quickly!!! Still even current with zero support copes with many things. If I had not messed things up with trying to get 3.10 Gnome in here would have been better. Current am building does not have that issue! I blew it on the Linux-image-extra as first shot with apt-get dist-upgrade tossed the kernel! Re-installed and inadvertently forgot Linux-image-extra. I had naturally assumed I re-installed, but found out last night when looking at options to see if I could downgrade to a lower kernel, found I had forgotten it and do I feel stupid!

Yeah 14.04, everybody is looking forward to it and would be lying if I said I am not! Am interested but with how these mini's get distributed, will not get my hands on it til 14.10 is done! Is a rotten shame on that and will forever complain on that til is fixed! I do not want a full blown Ubuntu. No.1 I hate Ubuntu Desktop is absolutely atrocious and ugly! Then when you install a full blown Gnome desktkop with it, have to watch out for about a thousand conflicts! Been there with 13.04 and believe me, I never want to return there! That OS was a nightmare logging in and out. Was lucky to get to the next desktop and most times had to hit the power button to reboot! Nothing I did for it ever cured it! Least current goes in and out of desktops like nothing and never a hassle!

I know is also all related to my poor knowledge of Linux and am pushing maybe too hard at points! Still, I just want to be able to do my own system have it the exact way I want it! I always say my systems resemble Ultimate and is pretty close. What is not exact is I really do not wish to use Mate as the top desktop. Now if it was an option as CInnamon is now, damned straight would be on the list of desktops in my OS! I do not care for the "either or" bit right now! I am still in deep hopes that Mate will make the break just as Cinnamon did! Cinnamon is quite sweet now that it made its break and will bet Mate would also be great if it makes that break! I still crave to learn Mate also! I just want the option of both and right now no choice!

Once again also will apologize for being such an idiot! I have a real bad temper and I start jumping right away! Has slowed a little with age and knowledge but not enough! I feel real bad for my posts and behavior. It is also not much like me! Most times I have the patience and just keep looking and checking, this time I blew my cool and was not at all right! Also when I see others on the net with the same hassle, I just want to do my part and help! Help has always been there for me and just want to always be able to give back! It's the right and only thing to do! When I find a way to cut down time for something, damned straight am grinning to share it! I do not wish others to go through hassles I have gone through! Any way best wishes to you and thanks for your info, have saved it and know it is very valuable, kernels are a bundle of joy! Never know when one has to make their own! Been there before, last year is a tough one, maybe next time will be better at it!

I was going to test this USB theory out but I have no clue where I put all my mice(could actually use one for school, but I digress). I still have ps/2, but this never bothered me because all my USB ports are dedicated to external memory.

Then it occurred to me that I have run several 13.10's straight off of USB 2.0 external hard drives and these have read all the other drives that are 2.0.
I would have to say there is an erroneous aspect to the assertion that 13.10 simply does not run USB 2.0.
