K Desktop Environment or Plasma Desktop Environment

Postby ryanvade » Mon Jul 29, 2013 12:32 am

I recently got into this discussion on G+. I was asking for help with a logout issue on KDE 4.11. Then this idiot posts some stupid crap about how K Desktop Environment is not what the desktop is called anymore. It is called the Plasma Desktop Environment. I of course told him that KDE used to (And I will always refer to it as) K Desktop Environment. I don't really care that the naming was changed to Plasma Desktop Environment. I know that the KDE ecosystem includes more than just the Desktop. Who gives a crap how you refer to it? If you went to a novice Linux user and asked them to install the Plasma Desktop Environment would they know what that is? NO. The would google it and find KDE. Then that person would ask you if you meant KDE. You would have to reply with "KDE means the entire ecosystem while Plasma is just the desktop". WOULD THEY REALLY KNOW WHAT YOU ARE TALKING ABOUT? NO NO NO.

So. Instead of helping me fix my issue, they argued about what my problem should be called. I fixed the issue myself. Not a very good way to resolve the issue. The KDE forums look like a much more civilized option for future questions.

IDIOTS. And they are supposed to be the KDE Community moderators....

Hmmm....
Mods calling 'em PDE instead of KDE. Sounds like a joke.
If it changes to PDE, ill still call it KDE.

Exactly.

Technically it did change though.
On 24 November 2009 the KDE Marketing Team announced a rebranding of the KDE project components, motivated by the perceived shift from building a desktop environment to a complete project around a community of "people who create software". The rebranding focused on de-emphasizing the desktop environment as "just another product", and emphasizing both the community and the other technologies provided as KDE software. After the repositioning, the name KDE no longer stands for K Desktop Environment, as it now acts as an umbrella brand for software produced by the community. What would have been previously known as KDE 4 will now be referred as "KDE Software Compilation 4" (abbreviated "KDE SC 4"). Regardless, many users still refer to it as KDE 4.

But starting an argument over this change that almost no one knows about is what makes me mad. Plus the fact this argument took away from the original technical support question. What if I hadn't fixed the issue?

I guess..It's KDE and it is the plasma desktop but that is of little importance. They are not going to change the name KDE so.

I always call it the Kubuntu Desktop Environment

What was the issue if you don't mind my asking?

And now, the completely true facts, as told by an anonymous man hiding behind a screen name:

I am using KDE in Notebook mode on my laptop. Instead of a task manager applet, Notebook mode uses an "Applications Currently Running" applet. Whenever I clicked on it, X would restart and I would be back at the login screen. I checked the settings, it was set to "Show applications in a menu" which was the issue. Apparently this setting is under heavy development. Unchecking that did the trick.

If they really want to change names, then announce it officially or stick in accordance with technical standards like " KDE Frameworks 5" --- KF5. Not become a fanboy.

KDE 5 will have all OpenGL code running on GPU. Nvidia better jump in. AMD already rules even with limited OpenCL support.

Something that was called 'compiz' is now modularised and spoken generically as 'Plasma 2'.
