I generally keep triple boot internal drives, 3 root, one swap, I usually back up to my externals pretty regularly and replace the OS often so I don't put a whole lot of thought into moving /home or /.
Recently cloning was brought to my attention and clonezilla in particular. Since I had never used it I had no thoughts on how it worked. Once I figured out it was pretty much a live OS dd gui-front end with extra capabilities I opted to just go about it myself since I use this method to transfer flash images.
I had Kubuntu on USB so I loaded it up....
Also I had RescaTux
A 160gb Drive
A 2 TB Drive
The 160 has Ultimate Edition 3.4, Black Opal, and Mangaka Moe, the 2tb has partitions set but only raring developmental installed
So I moved each partition, installing kubuntu on the empty ones to have them all setup, mounted, and ready to go, and then replaceed
Then I used Rescatux to restore the grub
