ZFS and Ubuntu????

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Wed Jan 23, 2013 11:22 pm

Number one we all know where ZFS really belongs? Right???? Then again we might have some people that don't know ZFS? First let me say ZFS is coined as a file system with a sort of recuperative characteristic to it. Simply put and in easy terms, files that are damaged are generally fixed within the boot process. Apologize for being poor on a full description, but what comes to follow is more important. The biggest point that needs to be understood is ZFS primarily belongs to the Unix system, hence there is a sophisticated way to load on Ubuntu systems, why??? Ubuntu does not fully support or have legal ownership over this system. Next does it work with Ubuntu???? Maybe if all you want to do is surf the internet, might be alright???? Present OS I put together was a devastating disaster!!!! Burning capabilities reduced, hard to update kernel, etc!!! Such a nightmare, that am holding the ISO back from export til is completely obliterated from it!!!! To loose the amount of capabilities for any user would be terrible!!!! As have said is no Ultimate, but is alright! Tested at school today via flash drive and it wanted to start using the hard drive which contains Windoze7! Loved that!!!! Is as intended since I can then access files I have on their hard drive!!! Maybe, I did not have it set right in Ultimate, but I was unable to get permission! Sure some would do terrible things with it, but not me!!! My intention is to try building more here and there!!! Just want to learn! Loved the Lincoln logs when I was a kid! Guess that never ends, since have carried building things for a long time!!!! Not sure but might just be able to use UB and have it set a folder on my share on that Windoze drive! Back to the point of ZFS, though and sorry for straying!!! Now I can fully understand why it was never done with Ultimate! Imagine going to open my computer and all the icons are sickly white! Ew yuk! Then imagine you want to watch a DVD. You have every codec under the sun, good, bad and ugly gstreamers and all you get??? 9 seconds of DVD play and errors out!!!! Not good! Am happy to have made this mistake as I now understand when I last tested a zfs filesystem for another OS, ironically in its own "hood" as was a Unix system, functions also seemed to be diminished! Guess it all goes to the adage "If it sounds to good to be true, it isn't!" As you know how curious I am(bad as my 11 cats!!!!) I would love to know if anyone here has ever had success with ZFS on a Linux system???? Will also admit am getting a little homesick for Ultimate to go back on the drive, but this curiosity with this contraption of mine is getting the better of me!!! Still thanking all that helped me here and still love it here!!!! Sorry for the delay of this OS I made, but I could not bare to let anyone have it until this issue was resolved!!! Should have it back together soon! Also just started getting access to the computer lab again as of today! Problems with registering for a cancelled class and some other disasters!!! Ah the joys of College!!! Sure is not any Animal House or fun time as depicted in some movies!!!! Then again real life is never that way!!!! Best of wishes to all here and always forever! Best place to be 24/7!!!!

Im afraid, but BBoss ZFS is one of the best linux/BSD filesystems out there..and its highly purpose-bound. Albeit the linux state is still pretty bad-low performance but stable.

im using it on freebsd server..the best for volumetric file transfers.
Although not recommended for normal usage.
Building an OS to use ZFS is not a good idea unless you know what to do.

A filesystem requires a scheduler just like a kernel: kinda something that delegates tasks with multiple threads(read/write)---just as you have cpu cores.

You can change the default I/O scheduler in Ultimate Edition for max performance but wont make any difference on an SSD...but HUGE difference on your HDD
since you use an HDD...here's a little something...try it on ext4 or maybe another

the command below will show you the different scheduler's available..
Code: Select all
cat /sys/block/sda/queue/scheduler

you can effect them and see the performance differences after running..
Code: Select all
echo "noop" | sudo tee /sys/block/<block-device>/queue/scheduler

from above 'noop' is the scheduler being used on <block-device> which is either sda/sdb etc....

You can change schedulers and check real world performance by doing disk transfers..

http://www.danielscottlawrence.com/shou ... or-my-ssd/
http://stackoverflow.com/questions/7294 ... o-the-disk

if you have more time also look into 'zram'...to further utilize ram better and increase overall system responsiveness and performance...again these things make little to no difference if you have a hefty setup with lots of ram and ssd---for Now.
zram makes a swap on ram instead of the usual hdd.

benches here:

Again your DVD not errors is amplified by not using amd drivers..things will further break as different elements come into play.
i had Ultimate Edition 3.4 on zfs...no problems there.

UPDATE: ubuntu 13.04(may) will integrate zram support!---but unstable now..

It's great to see your interest growing at such a fast rate BBoss. My 2 cents for ya. To run your OS on a ZFS or even UFS would cost you nothing but performance reduction and the only advantage you would gain would be random writes. But for storage ZFS is the standard with deduplication. Your Storage and Backup Industry included. Deduplication allows you to share the same piece of data that exists on multiple locations, thus saving you the space. ex. 2 Like Operating Systems with the same structure when backed up with deduplication, will create one backup of one Operating System and only the changes outside the structure from both. But besides that, Ext4 for root is more stable and performs great. Btrfs may have more promise in the future as snapshot management and rollback features become standard.with Operating Systems..

Oh yes are both quite right!!! Do need to look into this much further than I have, when time permits! Just seems for my current usage and this built system is not for it! Running great on the btrfs file system so have no complaints! Probably on a more polished and refined system such as Ultimate would run correctly. Have to remember is the first and I lack the education. Yes my lack on the AMD catalyst will most likely cause a few hassles, but for what I need to run at present is not necessary so why bother! DVD's are not a severe drain on Video. I had an old computer back in '02 that could play DVD's no hassle and am positive wasn't even 64mb on that card!!!(Ew talk about old, huh??) and with a 500mb processor! Bet kids use those for toys now!!! Just as soon as I uninstalled zfs all the way, my DVD's played perfectly! So I figured need to find more out about all this!!!! Is a long long road for me am barely nowhere yet! I really really appreciate all this feedback as will help me to learn as you have been doing!!! Can never thank anyone here enough for that!!!! I couldn't even get zfs to install. I formatted BE and BF partitions, did the define thing. Typed in just as defined and get a response "Can't be found!" So is definitely something I am missing somewhere!!!! So as I can not install it anyway is more less useless to me at present!!! For storage and transfer, I would bet that is a definite way to go. Performance, I have not had the proper checks on other OS's and Ultimate. When I say proper, I mean should have been longer than a couple of weeks! Although zfs was offered on Sabayon9, didn't stay on it long enough to try it! Also made some calls on zfs(might be unjust!) and Linux due to the amount of complaints. Most have been when upgrading the kernel. Also the fact Linux will not put it in the list to install says a bit! When you have to go out of your way to do something that is as complex, it generally shy's the end user away anyway!!!! Anyway as there is not loads and loads of people discussing zfs and some users might just be interested is great to get some more knowledge out here!!!! Can't thank enough for that as just not myself but many others will start to understand these file systems more! Needs to happen!!!! Also for others that get into a similar circumstance, will at least have documented what results I had!!! You know me if I can help, am going to!!!!
