Hi all,
Thought I'd say a big HELLO from somewhere in the middle of the United States!
To tell a little about myself, I've been a Linux user for about 5 years now, starting with Xandros, left it after the big blowup with Microsith, and I've wandered through various distros, finally settled on 'buntu, tried several flavours, stayed with some longer than others.
I'm basically into hardware but can stumble through some simpler Linux stuff. I mainly do a lot of applications, and stretch Koffice and OO to their limits.
Except for one critical Windblows proggy which will just not run under Wine or Crossover I've been Windoze free for about two years.
Got into Compiz Fusion for two reasons, both about equal in importance. a) I like eye candy, but not if it doesn't let me "get on with the program" and b) Compiz Fusion has greatly increased my "productivity". My Linux machines have to be work machines first and foremost.
Compiz on other distros is well.... like pulling teeth, except for the OpenSuse project, but I just can't get into their version of how to do things....
So.... here I am, and I' think I'll stay....
Here's what I had in the first install.
a) the first download was a bad download. K3B burned it ok, and I even did it on an Hasta La Vista machine and both were bad. They both stopped at 71% if that helps any, although the live DVD ran marvellously, it found all of the hardware on all three of my machines, a Toshiba lappy a Sony Vaio Lappy and a self build 4 gig dual processor machine.
After the second download here is the first install:
Toshiba Satellite laptop.
Intel Celeron 440 at 1.8 ghz
1 gig memory
2.0 found all of the hardware just fine.
2.0 popped the restricted driver and loaded fglrx providing 1280 x 800 on an ATI Radeon Express onboard card.
2.0 found both wireless cards the onboard Atheros and a D-Link Airplus G card without any intervention on my part.
2.0 found a Logitech wireless mouse(dongle) automatically.
2.0 found the onboard sound card automatically but it only plays through headphones, which is exactly what has happened with all other distros, so it is nothing to worry about.
Amarok had the drivers in place to find the "Cool Streams" .pls playlists without intervention on my part, I'm listening to Chantal Classic Techno(one of my faves) as I type, and I must say that the stereo is quite good, better than I've heard on other distros....at least that is my impression! :)
I really did NOT expect Compiz Fusion to work on this machine. It has NOT worked with the couple of other distros with which I've fiddled with Compiz Fusion, but....I gotta say...
It "just works"... I enabled floppy docs, cube rotation, animations and 3D windows with just mouse clicks and just work, simple as that.
Again, I have to emphasize that I have never been able to get Compiz Fusion to work on this machine before, so whatever tweaks have been made with Ultimate Edition have "got 'er done"! Bravo!

I'll do bluetooth next and see how it works, and that will be it for a while until I install on the other machines, but I'll come back and visit ....

And.....by the by....I just love the rotating cursor! :)

Just for giggles and grins... I had split out the hard drive on the Toshiba Satellite lappy and just installed Ultimate Edition on one part of it and kept the rest for didna know what, so I installed a couple of other distros which have Compiz (thinking that maybe something was up with Compiz in and of itself) and guess what...... it sits there like a lump and either just doesn't run or crashes.....whereas with Ultimate Edition compiz works smooth as silk.... and I have been pleasantly surprised that Compiz works at bootup as a saved setting....which I have not seen before!

I do not normally use this as a "production" machine, but the whole package is so well integrated that the situation will probably change... I use compiz for "productivity" work and have generally restricted those activities to my tower or a Sony Vaio lappy....so... I'm beginning to wonder.......just WHAT is Ultimate Edition going to do on those! :o

Dunno what TheMaan has done with Ultimate Edition, but whatever it is it works great!

It's called male menopause, Stride. Something to look forward too. One day you will wake up and everything will hurt. That's what booze and pills are for. We have one muscle that still works and that is really all that matters(there are even pills for that), anyway!!! We are not crazy, we just don't give a @$#! and don't care we don't give a @$#!!!! And if you don't behave yourself we will pull your pants down and spank you!!!
p.s. Do I look like I'm smiling?

That's what 303s are for. That way you don't have to run.

I really want one of those! We have a terrible feral hog problem where I live, and think that would be the perfect rifle to hunt them with! I know, I know spca!
