A PC costs much less than a toaster or an electric kettle to run . Your stove and dryer are 220 volts!! My power supply is 500 watts(and is not being maxed out). The toaster is closer to 1500.
Have a look at this:http://howto.altenergystore.com/Reference-Materials/Power-Ratings-typical-for-Common-Appliances/a21/

interesting read.ill see if i can find the page i read.and i should have added in my first post that this was based on a pc running 24/7 like a htpc.I do also realize it depends greatly on hardware also being green or not.but i mainly pointed that out because its a cost most don't give thought too.

or i could just be overloaded with info, not making sense of it yet...... ;)

I'm not interested in Windows products. I don't even install XP anymore if I can help it. I backup my disc image and spend 2 minutes to restore it when I have to.

My Windows Vista Experience: Hear Ye Now My Tale of Woe...

So I'm in Fry's Electronics a few months ago... See this smokin' little HP laptop that's been marked down to some ridiculous price because HP is discontinuing the model. This bitch is the sweetness too, AMD X2 Mobile proc, 2GB of DDR2, discrete nVidia graphics, honkin big hard drive... Not too mention it's just gorgeous; I mean this thing is freaking sweet. So I'm thinkin' this little gem oughta run a 'buntu install like a turpentined freakin' cat, right? Comes with Vista preinstalled and what not but screw it, I'll just wipe it and do a clean install. I get the sucker home, plug it in to let the battery charge a little and decide to check out Vista before I say "buh-bye..." right? Just to see what all the fuss is about. I'd say it's been charging a couple hours when I boot it up. Vista kicks off, I answer some questions, set up the account and what not and then, in a F--KING BLAZING MOMENT OF APPLIED INTELLIGENCE, go through the process of making a Vista system-restore disc. I think nothing of this at the time, however. So anywho... Now I have my account in Vista.

I start poking around... Looking at $#!% and just toolin' around you know? Gettin' a feel for it and think, "Oh, shoot... I should do my updates."

Log into Microsoft Update and...

and...

KABLOOIE!!! Blue, Mother-F--king, Screen of Mother-F--king DEATH!!! Can you freaking believe it?? A freaking BSOD!!

Total Time Out of the Box: ~2 hours.

Long story short: I had two or three more BSOD's under Vista that day and so, with my curiousity now totally satisfied, I performed a Vista-ectomy and installed Ubuntu. Turns out the wireless card is a cold-rolled, blue-steel bitch to work with so, after struggling with it for three days, I just plain gives up. I packs up the pretty little lappy in it's box and I takes it back to Fry's. *sniffle* 'Twasn't meant to be it seems.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.

everyone i know who runs vista, except two people have always come to me to fix their systems.those two that don't have any problems are running vista 64 bit.go figure...i did a fresh install of xp last week, did the updates, rebooted, and i.e kept crashing afterwards  i always partition a small amount of the drive for a linux os,just so i can recover anything important.when my friends ask me what that new thing is i just say its a recovery os,and feel free to use it.ive converted three of my friends to linux and they are happy.but as much as i use linux,i still need windows for some apps........sigh.i used nlight to make a custom copie of xp(all legit)basically ive stripped the hell out of it and put only what i need on the cd(like my drivers for my hardware, firefox ect.)and i never had it bsd on me.its kinda like remasterme for windows ;)

granted....this is not for newbies, but im a noob and i did it <BREW>

The best way to install XP is don't bother doing any updates, turn off the security center altogether and install a real firewall and good anti virus software. The only thing you may need is .net framework. Use Opera as your web browser and don't open up any attachments at all. Set your firewall to block all ports(including Microsoft's crap but leave open a port for your anti virus updates).
