Start disabling services and processes and see what you can get it down to before it is crippled or unsecure. my question also, does it still keeps polling the hard drive? ( also know as the " why the hell did my hard drive down shift when I ain't even doing anything")

I've got Windows 7 inside a Virtualbox(vmplayer) and it runs just fine on way less than that. For the few Windows applications I use it works great. We'll see how much it costs first before deciding how crappy it really is. It looks a hell of a lot better than xp. Whether it functions better remains to be seen. Ram is so cheap these days I don't even care anymore. At least there has been a effort security wise and it comes with Opera 10 beta. I use few Windows specific applications these days, it's more of a mild interest than anything else.

I use Windows XP in a virtualbox for only one reason and that is - I need viewpoint media to read documents on some genealogy sites. If I knew how to get viewpoint media to run on Ubuntu it would be goodbye Windows. I am fairly new to computers and learnt on windows 98. In the space of 6 mos. I had the computer down to the repair shop 4 times at a cost of $40.00 dollars per trip. I was about to forget about computers, when I found a small readers digest size magazine on linux. I've tried Xandros which is a good OS except it has a really funky installation system. I couldn't get my all-in-one to work. I put in a report on the problem and waited 3 months and still nothing was done. I then started experimenting with various OS's and finally came across Ubuntu. The service backup is unbelievable, any problem I had was usually solved in hours. AND IT"S ALL FREE !
I don't believe there is a bad linux system, just some better than others.

No, you don't ;) but I do, I was the one who built his PC and installed system on it, so as I did for many many others and yet do not have my own one, just do not have enough place in my apartment to put a workstation, forced to use a laptop, kind of sad
