New Mission begins: Fix Gnome Desktop Looks

Postby BBOSAK2143 » Thu Nov 13, 2014 9:14 pm

Now, I am not talking about Flashback/Fallback. No I am talking about the regular Gnome desktop. Remember the ole song from group Rush, called "2112"? At the end of the song it ends with "Attention all Planets of the Solar Federation, We have assumed control!" Well, since the start of Gnome 3 the bottom bar has been under Gnome's control. We can fiddle diddle all we like with settings and fact remains, is generic black with bright white text. I mean, I see that on boot, must I see that on a nice looking desktop too???? I say, time has come to get control and change it. I am going to do my best to get this changed so others can also do whatever they want to do with it.

Yes, I have once again jumped on the high horse of mine to battle the main enemy and that is white on black. I still feel those colors solely belong to the past, way back when there were no computers and only newspapers. This is a computer people, not some lame typewriter. I am appalled with this day in age were graphics cards are larger than my current ram chips and seeing some old garbage like this. Face it, these computers can do the most sophisticated things with graphics and to hold them to something so barbaric, isn't that uncalled for?

Of course you know current shell theme is going to be Cyan based, right? Mmm, just sends shivers down my spine that beautiful color and all the highs and lows can do and retain such beauty. Is not that I hate Black or White, just believe there are more appropriate ways to deal with those colors instead of pitting them together all the time and making things look so darn cheap. Every black and white theme I see these days could have been created by a 6 year old, since where is there any challenge??? Do you ever see any of my themes being replicated/reproduced??? Reason is not that it looks awful, reason is how difficult it is to keep up with all the changes. To be honest, it nails me all the time. Sure not perfect and nowhere near it, but least I do my best to get that alternative look. I know, I can not be the only person on this earth that is bored sick of 1995 coloring. Bring on 2015, I am ready for it. Age is never going to make me stop longing for change.

I want my colors to sing on the desktop, but I also want everyone else's to do the same. I know others may want some other color down for those messages in the message tray, so will start working on it. Right now, message tray itself matches rest of the theme pretty well. Is easy enough to do. Other, not sure if will happen so easily, so thank goodness, I have a system in vbox and gnome boxes to experiment with. The idea of not booting to the desktop is not appealing to me at all. Been there with shell themes and is no fun. Of course have the flash drive to fix things, but is simpler to use virtual and go from there. Any way am always hoping for some agreement on things as to help others obtain exactly what we all want on our desktops. All advice welcome. Will be back with improvements soon for Gnome 3.14

Have to show all, progress is being made. Remember entire shell theme is not done. I have barely begun to fight on this one. Gnome 3.14 needs a little shove into 2014. Technologically speaking is there, appearance not quite. That is of course when we consider the stock theme. Very boring on that stuff. I mean here is a desktop capable of using transparencies, so why don't we take full advantage of it, right?

Of course, the important thing is, the user should be able to see what is going on. Of course, let's not blind the user with bright white, okay??? Almost reminds me when I am sound asleep at night, you know I would get quite upset if someone was to wake me and shine a bright white light in my face. So, that is how I also feel about my desktop. Another of the many reasons, my desktops do not have white text coloring. Any way, for those interested in changing the looks, first we need to go into usr/share/gnome-shell/theme/gnome-shell.css edit that file with gedit in the section message-tray. For background color, dump that png and change it to the color you want. As you can see by picture below mine is Cyan, and a bit more transparent then the original.

Next, we want to get rid of that awful white text and grayish and black boxes. Now that is accomplished by going into usr/share/gnome-shell/extensions/window-list/stylesheet.css. I am not going to describe in detail what needs to be done as most attempting this should know the wording and be able to change the coloring to what you enjoy. "We have assumed control" I am still working on all this, so it will match the exact look, I expect of a BBOSAK2143 theme. I am a terrible critic to my own work. I will fight with myself for hours to make it look exactly what I see in my mind. As said before, I know all the work I do is never going to please everyone, but least it works for some and I just hope others get inspired for newer ideas. I will be eternally grateful if the mold of all those 5+ year themes is completely broken and new ideas can come forth to show our developers we are paying attention to their extensive progress and work.

Before I bore everyone to tears, below is the picture of current work which is not complete yet. Just started yesterday and am hoping before the end of this next week for it to be working on the money and also a new fixed theme for the Flashback desktop. Am reaching for the stars again, but am going to get them this time as I refuse to give up.

Re: New Mission begins: Fix Gnome Desktop Looks

I spent a lot of time, in fact way too much time on this theme to get it exactly the way I want it to look. I have to say, this time around I am finally pleased. Since Gnome Desktop is based off my recent Cyana line and Gnome-Classic takes on my first line of Black Beauty, the theme is to be called Cyana_and_Black_Beauty3.14Shell. For the first time since I ever used Gnome or Gnome-Classic desktops this is the absolute longest period of time I ever spent on those desktops and is mainly due to all the changes I have been able to accomplish. Most people are probably tired of hearing my mission of making users aware of what they are doing. Even though, I have a few years of Linux under my belt, number one am no where near a pro. Second, I still understand what it is to be a new user and confused. I basically, create most of these looks and functions so it will be more of an aid to newer users. I just hope is also appealing and fun. Since Linux snared me with extreme looks of Gnome's desktops, I just feel others may also get snared this way.

Not sure on how well I will come out when I start taking care of my normal themes for gtk-3.0 and 2.0, but for this moment least I feel good about this shell theme. Am going to become a little more scarce on here as I think I have become a little annoying on some points and I have always wished never to be that way. Seems it did not work and many are avoiding questions I may ask, or even posts. Very sorry for upsetting anyone as I only ever meant to help or compliment. Has always been in my nature to do so.

For those working on themes, shells, etc..; is a tough area and takes time. Always have patience and a loaded OS on a flashdrive for those grievous shell theme errors. Been there many times, so I just extend that thought so, in case a small mistake is made can be easily fixed. Text coloring is an area that seems to be quite repulsive to many, but to those of us that work these themes, has to be the most difficult undertaking as to the many factors involved so the user can still read all information, yet enjoy all the coloring. After this post, I intend to upload this shell theme and only hope will be greeted with admiration and dignity. Those that find it offensive, I only hope they keep it to themselves as to not disturb anyone else that enjoys the look. No one can enjoy everything someone else does as we are all created differently.

As I have stated in the past, I only want to add a little difference to themes as I have always found difference exciting and is the basis of all the works I have created. Even if one person finds any of my work inspiring is a total joy to me. Here's a look at the Gnome desktop of 3.14. Little wore out from life's events to also picture the Gnome-Classic desktop, but that will be shown at Gnome looks upon upload. Best wishes to all and hope you enjoy the holidays.
