How many work spaces do you have in your lower task bar ? Right click on a work space window in bottom task bar, Open preferences and in the small box that opens bring your "columns" to 3 or 4 or higher, your cube wont deform to a cylinder or sphere with less than 3 work spaces ! ;)
also if you do have 3 or more work spaces in your task bar, Open compiz settings manager goto cube reflection and deformation, "deform" tab if deform bar reads "none" Your cube will deform to a cube, click to set to sphere, or cylinder. :)

Ok I have been working on something else And came upon this, If cube reflection and deformation check box is left un-checked you will only deform into a cube, No matter what you have set for deformation.Obvious, I know, But sometimes we tend to over look the obvious . :)

Looks like we may be out of ideas - so as a long shot, through your menus, System>Preferences>Appearance, click on the Visual Effects tab and click on extra. This will sort of bypass CCSM. Then try going back in to CCSM and see what happens.

Good Luck.

Try install simple compiz settings manager too, from synaptic or ubuntu-tweak.And for the last solution uninstall and reinstall again all the compiz packages through synaptic.Be sure you have unchecked the third-party for compiz in ubuntu-tweak too.
