I had similar problems in elive e17 compiz and it was an incompatibility between video driver and the new kernel. In the end I found that I have to add in the /etc/X11/Xorg.conf,in the "Screen" section the option "DefaultDepth 24" and in the "Device" section the option "AddARGBGLXVisuals true".Exit.Reboot.
I don't know if it's working in Ubuntu too.
