virtual cd/dvd-rom emulator

Postby steve423 » Wed Feb 25, 2009 1:45 pm

In Windows I use Daemon Tools or Alcohol to mount CD/DVD ISO images. Is there a program like these for Linux?

Yes I'm aware of the terminal method but I'm always looking for a way to make it easier for the end user. I work for a small computer shop and we're hoping to help make Linux mainstream at least in our small town. If I have a customer that needs this feature I'd like to be able to have them use a "dummy" program rather than the terminal.

Well Steve, tell them to dummy up and learn something. People aren't as stupid as we think they are, just lazy, from using Windows. Once they realize they have complete control over there operating system they will change their mind quickly!!

I've tried acetoneiso2, gisomount, furiusisomount and none of this mount the iso like it was in a cdrom as is the case with daemons tools. I liken this programs to isobuster which merely lets you browse the iso. Being able to mount the iso as a cdrom becomes relevant when you have a repository dvd on your hard drive and want add those repos to the synaptic package manager. So just being able to view the contains isnt good enough all the time, is there a way to mount the iso's in a virtual cdrom so synaptic with let you use it as a repo?

I tried cdemu out, your link had a little better install instructions. Install was a pain but got it. There should just be a deb for it. When mounted in cdemu a start package manager prompt came up for all of my iso's except the first one which is wierd. And using the add cdrom option in synpatic keeps telling me to insert a cd, so it doesnt see it that way. I got to figure out a way to get that first dvd to prompt me with the start package manager.

I tried your terminal command on it and the message back was "mount: mount point /mount does not exist"
edit: got it to work, but still not starting package manager or recognised by synaptic add cdrom.

This is the traditional way for those who like using the command line interface. Fast and easy. Just open a terminal or konsole and type:

Code: Select all
mkdir ~/temp
mount -o loop -t iso9660 /path/to/test.iso ~/temp

Now the iso files will be stored in the ~/temp dir. Just remember to change /path/to/test.iso to where you have the .iso file and ~/temp to the directory you want to have it mounted.

To unmount the cd/dvd image type:

Code: Select all
umount ~/temp
CPU: Pentium 4 3Ghz

Mainboard : MSI MS-7028
Ram: 2GB
