Go to your start menu and find an entry that is called terminal and open it. Then type what you are supposed to there. This is similar to a dos command in Windows. You can actually run your whole system from the command line(not that you would want to). You will find that it is easier to do certain things from a terminal. Don't be afraid to type in the wrong thing. It will usually tell you that you have screwed up or question you.

Post your system specs(video card, sound card, network card etc.). It sounds like you may have a hardware issue of some kind. If you installed it with an optical drive you may have an issue there(or a funky disc). Another option for install is unetbootin(using a 2 gig flash drive and getting your bios to boot from a usb drive). It works great and is faster than an optical drive install(it's easy to use as well).

I'm not sure what EYP is supposed to be.

Ubuntu 7.10 and this one are quite different. There is a different kernel, so support for your hardware might not be available(so you need a work around). This seems to be a bug from what I discovered.
See if this works:try to reinstall gnome-panels(solution from Lauchpad website).

Let me try a Linux to English translation:
open a terminal and type

sudo chown-Rc your_username_here /home/your_username_here

Obviously you need to replace the blue letters with your actual username.

Nick found that solution on the French Ubuntu site, the person asking for help was named
Eat Your Potatoes, so the person answering just typed in EYP, knowing he would understand to type in his username. It just lost something in translation.
