wireless support

Postby tuxman67 » Sun Oct 16, 2011 3:50 pm

Hello
I have recently installed Ultimate Edition 3.0 on my Compaq Presario A940NR
and have encountered the issue with my onboard Atheros Comm. AR5001 802.11b/g WLAN

Other Linux such as Mepis 11.0 and earlier & pclinuxos 2012 Have NO difficulty detecting this all but completely automatically configure this with a kernel module "Ath5k" (Well I have to supply the wpa2 passkey...duh)

BUT NO Ubuntu version can do this.. Why??
I do not enjoy using Ndis wrapper(It feels like Im depending on MS driver technology) but I have successfully
used it in other cases (Im an experienced linux installer/user for over 12 years testing different varieties on different hardware)
I have attempted using Ndis wrapper to install 2 proper drivers (both reports "hardware present")
Not having any luck with supplied ndis wrapper in /usr/lib file, I removed it and inststalled native XP driver as supplied by Compaq support site. Either too no avail.

At least with each of these drivers, NM (network Manager ) was kind enough to report a wireless device is "available"
but "not ready" or "busy"..

I really want to enjoy Ultimate Edition 3.0 but wireless support...is hard to forfeit..
Please dont make me go back to mepis and leave Ultimate Edition with unwanted regrets.

thanks,
Tuxman
