hello again. I bought a new usb wifi that was for Linux (different one from the link above) and it came with a driver disk. rtl8712 8188_8191 8192SU something or another its for a Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd. RTL8101E/RTL8102E PCI Express Fast Ethernet controller [10ec:8136] (rev 01)

I'm having issues getting it to work I've unzipped everything like the directions state and the next step is to make. though once I enter make I get this error:
Code: Select all
 make ARCH=x86_64 CROSS_COMPILE= -C /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/build M=/home/jeff/downloads/rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0005.20091112.p4/driver/rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0005.20091229  modules
make: *** /lib/modules/2.6.32-5-amd64/build: No such file or directory.  Stop.
make: *** [modules] Error 2
jeff@jeffLapTop:~/downloads/rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0005.20091112.p4/driver/rtl8712_8188_8191_8192SU_usb_linux_v2.6.0005.20091229$

any ideas on why this is?
Thanks

Do you even have 2.6.32-5 headers installed ?

If your using newer headers, then the script will need modified to use the newer headers.

OR

That driver is just flat out to old to use newer kernel sets.

OR

Headers are just flat out not installed.

What your seeing it a DPKG error in build of header modules error.

You sure it don't work out of the box ?

What kernel set for what OS ?

Tried the new final 2.6.38.5 kernel set thats quite complete with wireless drivers.

You sure it don't work out of the box ? yes, if I plug it in directly in either windoze or linux it does nothing until the drivers are installed

What kernel set for what OS ? well I first tried to install it in u.e.2.9 now I'm trying it in debian squeeze both give the same errors

Tried the new final 2.6.38.5 kernel set thats quite complete with wireless drivers. I may try that and see what happens

http://kernel.ubuntu.com/~kernel-ppa/mainline/

Don't forget to install BOTH header packs.

Might also consider linux-firmware upgrade.

Ya tried Ubuntu natty 11.04 yet ?

I went ahead and updated to Ubuntu 11.04 to try it out. The usb wifi I got worked out of the box, though it has an issue and I ran into the same issue with Ultimate Edition 2.9 and that is it will only stay connected for less than a minute, then reconnect after 3 minutes then repeats the cycle. looking around google and forums this seems to be a common issue. have you had any issues with the USB you use from that newegg link?

some 40+ of them sold, never one issue with Ultimate Edition 2.6.1 - 2.7 - 2.8 - 2.9 - Ubuntu 11.04 - 11.10.

All work flawless out of the box.
