"How do you set a VH-100E <N> modem to DHCP?"

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

Hmmm.....just read through both your post's.

Just one thing comes to mind.Try to install ubuntu 9.4 instead of Ultimate Edition You might have to use the alternative jaunty cd too.Either way if ubuntu installs with graphics, then your in good shape. You can then install ultimatix to make Ultimate Edition

But stay away from 9.10...its not stable yet.Things won't work,so you can't really trouble shoot the problem.Jaunty, and karmic are two different beasts.

In either posts I don't recall you saying you checked the checksum of the dvd's.Did you?

That's a lot of reading to help a guy you've never met. Thanks.

As I understood it, the Ultimate Edition versions I tried failed because of the problem supporting my Intel Graphics Chip. This situation shouldn't be different in Ubuntu 9.4, should it? I'll try it and see though. The only reason I'm using 9.10 is because it was the only one that would install.

Cell wrote:You can then install ultimatix to make Ultimate Edition

Is that really all it takes to transform an Ubuntu system into Ultimate Edition? WoW! That's great news! I have a Ubuntu on another computer because it doesn't have a DVD Drive and Ultimate Edition wouldn't fit on a CD. If this is the case, then I'll make that switch today! Thanks a whole lot for that little titbit of information!

Cell wrote:In either posts I don't recall you saying you checked the checksum of the dvd's.Did you?

Not sure what a checksum is, but if think you mean some kind of verification that the disks were burned properly and that the OS is complete. Well all I can say here is that the Ultimate Edition disks were proven on the Home system that I have. No problems here so, I wouldn't expect a problem anywhere else they were installed.

Cell wrote:But stay away from 9.10...its not stable yet.Things won't work,so you can't really trouble shoot the problem.Jaunty, and karmic are two different beasts.

I can't stay away from Karmic, it's the only one that works at all right now. Any way to just put those new Intel Drivers on a disk and through them in at some point during the installation of a more proven version of Ultimate Edition or Ubuntu?

Thanks again Cell, I appreciate your help.

No...but from a users stand point yes.

All Distros are different. Two based on the same can be different. It boils down to how a person makes it...whats added, and whats not.

I'm failing at pointing out that Karmic is for testing....its not complete.Yes your graphics work(it should work in jaunty.Thousands of people have your Intel chip...but something is borked with the dvd,or your system.) but maybe the drivers,or kernel aren't playing nice with your Ethernet chip. You can't install karmic right now,and expect anything to work.Though that might change tomorrow...I think they are putting a freeze on the kernel.Which is good news.

Also ndiswrapper is...well what the name implies.A wrapper. It wraps around a windows driver( more specific it uses the inf file from the windows driver in which you manually have to extract.) in which makes your hardware work.To be blunt. Its useless without the windows driver.I know...I've been using it for years.

Like I said. You will get better support in the Karmic forum.

Anywho, good luck.

Oh ya indecently the command to get a dhcp ip from your router/modem is...

Code: Select all
sudo dhclient #

or...

Code: Select all
sudo dhclient

cant remember which one.

Thanks for the advice. I was under the impression that Karmic was just a short stint away from going into full operation and that would come with a New version of Ultimate Edition on its heels. I have my O.S. on a sepperate partition so I figured I could run with this untill The Mann conjured up its Ultimate Edition counter part, then switch them out.

I'll go back to working with Ultimate Edition 2.3 then, but that puts me back in the same boat. Assuming that the hardware is not the problem,(as the system does function properly under the Japanese Windows it came with) where can I find out what I need to do to get the O.S. to install?

I'll find out how to check the checksum to verify the disk is not the problem. Then if I do have the same trouble with the monitor I'll repost that problem in the Ultimate Edition 2.3 area.

Cell wrote:Also ndiswrapper is...well what the name implies.A wrapper. It wraps around a windows driver( more specific it uses the inf file from the windows driver in which you manually have to extract.) in which makes your hardware work.To be blunt. Now I'm troubled. If I read you right you're telling me that ndiswrapper is a dead end for me yet Amir seems to be saying the opposite. I have 2 Admins with conflicting opinions advising me and I'm lost as to who's advice I should be listening to.

I suppose for safety sake, I'll keep working on Karmic and put Ultimate Edition 2.3 on one of my free partitions.

Cell wrote:Like I said. You will get better support in the Karmic forum.

I did just recently post there, but no reply yet. I'll try moving it to a different area. Sorry for Karmic Problems on your doorstep.

Thanks I'll try putting it in and see what happens. What's it for. I know you said I'll get a dhcp ip from my modem, but what do I do with that? It has something to do with setting up a dhcp connection, I guess. But what exactly? I'm sorry if my question sounds a bit lame, but most I'm pretty thick headed when it comes to computer stuff.

Thanks again Cell.

Hello szaemon .
In General DHCP server connection will give you Automatic IP every time that you
will start your machine.
What said that you are not be Disconnect if your provider will fix the section on
His servers for some upgrade/update the section with you IP on that part.
DHCP will get IP from other section for you to let you work without problems or issues.
That is the raison we want you to add your modem to this Direction ;)

Well I tried both of those DHCP commands, I'm not sure they did anything though.

I've also posted a new request regarding the monitor trouble I'm having in Ultimate Edition 2.3. I'll keep looking for answers with both problems as the modem/connection trouble is likely to follow me into any version of Ubuntu.

Amir as for ndiswrapper, the video instructs me to type in LSPCI and then LSPCI with the -n switch, then I should use that Information to Identify my some kind of card or something and then download and install drivers for the computer. Again, here is that information. Can you tell me what I'm looking for and what to do next? Please.

Thanks,
szaemon

Hello szaemon.
If you have install the packages of ndiswrapper good.
now you need to install those packages for the DHCP.

Never underestimate the ignorance of a noob!

Thank you Moebius, Amir and Cell for all of your help. I found the solution to my Network troubles. I have said it before and I will say it again. Computer illiteracy should view as an actual disability in this modern world.

What was that magical answer? What has brought about the end of 3 weeks of unfinished work, evenings wasted away and about $1,500 in expenses?

sudo pppoeconf

I suppose that was such a basic piece of knowledge to everyone, no one considered it as the possible solution. I knew I had to log in my ISP I.D and Password somewhere, at least that much I had right...mmmm....

I really need to learn more about computers. I hope you 3 can enjoy a nice long laugh at my expense, it's the least I can offer you for the time and effort you spend helping me.

Thanks again to all of you.
