"How do you set a VH-100E <N> modem to DHCP?"

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

Re: "How do you set a VH-100E <N> modem to DHCP?"

Postby szaemon » Tue Oct 13, 2009 9:17 pm

Thanks Amir, that settles that. That means my Network Manager is set up fine and has been from the beginning.

So what about the connection ID and Password from my ISP? If it doesn't go into Network Manager, then where is it supposed to be put in? Somewhere inside the Modem maybe?

And what about accessing the Modem? Can you access a Modem without a Router?

I'm not sure what it does exactly, but in my house if I don't send my internet line through a Router, I can't get any connection.

Admin-Amir wrote:That is all you need to configure here.
now the question is if you have install the DHCP client?

What exactly is a DHCP Client and how do I check if it is installed?

Moebius wrote:I hate to suggest this, but if you are really really desperate, a Wireless USB network dongle and a wireless router attached to your modem could bypass this issue altogether. Or maybe even one of those USB to Ethernet conversion cables to convert one of your USB ports into another Ethernet port... just thinking outside the box here.

Not a clue what that means in real terms, but if it gets me online I'm all for it? Where can I find instructions?

I'll get Java and Flash installed today and see if that helps me along.

...Back to the office now. I think I'll bring the computer home tonight just to see if it can connect in the house...

Thanks again folk for all the help.

Well...you have to contact your ISP.It has nothing to do with Linux...don't even mention it.Just ask for what you need.

From my experience, the Modem has those details. You may also need to put those details into an email program to send/receive emails (unless you use webmail).

szaemon wrote:And what about accessing the Modem? Can you access a Modem without a Router?

I always thought that was the case. A router should simply allow you to share your connection with other computers in the household/office.

I was referring to the purchase of additional equipment. It is really only a last ditch effort if we find that your onboard network connector is the issue. Keep following Admin-Amirs advice - he seems to think that it is not the issue. His knowledge in this field is far greater than mine (for the time being ;) )

Cheers.

Not really.I keep an wifi usb stick around that uses generic drivers just for reasons like this.

From my experience, the Modem has those details. You may also need to put those details into an email program to send/receive emails (unless you use webmail).

I read more than one post on different forums about this modem that in Japan the user had to contact there ISP to get that info....don't know why,but its in black, and white.

I put the post title in google, and came up with that little tidbit. Some is Japanese, but you can use a translator.

Yep - read some similar things too.
I would have to assume though (yes I know what they say about assuming  ) that if szaemon can access the net through windows, then those details must already be present in the modem? or is there something we are all missing? There is also talk about a CTU? an IPv6/IPv4 translation bridge device?

The way I read it is the reason for working in windows is because he's taking the pc(not the modem) to a different place...i.e. the office. Its little confusing to me.Your right tho.If it works in windows at the same place that he is trying to use Linux...it should be fine. The modem that is.Then theres a totally different problem.

Ain't chasing your own tail fun....

Edit:maybe I missed it...but why are you installing an older version of Ubuntu?

Hello szaemon.

First get please the ndiswrapper files from here, and install them on your machine.
Here is the How to for you:
http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=25683
Download from here please:
http://sourceforge.net/projects/ndiswrapper/

Code: Select all
/pool/main/n/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper-common_1.54-2ubuntu1_all.deb
/pool/main/n/ndiswrapper/ndiswrapper-utils-1.9_1.54-2ubuntu1_amd64.deb

ndiswrapper (.deb) is normally supplied with the installation CD in the path stated by xebian. ndisgtk (.deb) can also be found on the CD in the /pool/main/n/ndisgtk directory. I believe you need to install ndiswrapper in order to install ndisgtk

NOW-you can go with this How To (wireless part) from here and see if that is done for you (or the rest of the process down here that I have post for you (write kind of book here  :
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthr ... 3#wireless

please open terminal and past this command there, and upload the output from there here:

Code: Select all
ifconfig -a

And please make those commands one after the other:

Code: Select all
sudo modprobe raw1394
sudo modprobe ohci1394
sudo modprobe ieee1394
sudo modprobe eth1394

And the last on will be:
Code: Select all
ifconfig eth1 up

Now In the file
Code: Select all
/etc/modprobe.d/blacklist
there are the lines

# causes no end of confusion by creating unexpected
network interfaces
blacklist eth1394

Simply add a '#' to comment out the second line

O.K now you can insert the next command to get the name of the card,
and to see if it gut support in Ubuntu:

Code: Select all
lspci -v | less

and you can see the list of the supported cards here:
https://help.ubuntu.com/community/WifiD ... sSupported

The last part that I want to look for answers see if you can do it with the wire connection there will start with:

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install update-manager-core

Then:

Code: Select all
sudo do-release-upgrade

Open a terminal console and run this command:

Code: Select all
 nslookup archive.ubuntu.com

Code: Select all
 Name:   archive.ubuntu.com
   Address: 91.189.88.46
   Name:   archive.ubuntu.com
   Address: 91.189.88.31
   Name:   archive.ubuntu.com
   Address: 91.189.88.45

You can use either of the three IP addresses in the example.

Add an entry in
Code: Select all
/etc/hosts

Open
Code: Select all
/etc/hosts
in a text-editor and:
Code: Select all
   91.189.88.46 dk.archive.ubuntu.com

Thanks again to all of you for the help and the time you're putting in on this.

Let's see now...

I have them. What I don't have is a place to type them in at. It's kind of like having a Key and a Door, but no Keyhole.

Cell wrote:The way I read it is the reason for working in windows is because he's taking the pc(not the modem) to a different place...i.e. the office. Its little confusing to me.Your right tho.If it works in windows at the same place that he is trying to use Linux...it should be fine. The modem that is.Then theres a totally different problem.

Forgive my ignorance in stating the obvious, but the way I see it Windows works because the Wizard does all the techy type stuff and comes up with a box that says insert User I.D. and Password from your ISP. I think that I have to find that place where the User Name and Password go and it isn't in Network Manager.

Cell wrote:maybe I missed it...but why are you installing an older version of Ubuntu?

Did I misstyped somewhere? I'm installing Ubuntu 9.10 and thanks to Moebius, I just went from the Alpha version to the Beta.

Moebius wrote:I was referring to the purchase of additional equipment.

Ooh... that's a strain on the wallet, I think I'll side step that workaround for the time being... Amir just posted a book load of code for me to put into the terminal, so I'll try my luck with that first.

Cell wrote:I read more than one post on different forums about this modem that in Japan the user had to contact there ISP to get that info....don't know why,but its in black, and white.

That may actually be it. Japan is so screwy in the most obscure ways, I may in fact not be allowed to access the modem and it may require the ISP to set it up, which they did for the Japanese version of Windows when they first installed the internet connection.

Amir I'm afraid Java and Flash no effect on this problem.

I'll run the code you7re suggesting then let you know what comes of it.

Thanks again to All of You

9.10

Now I'm confused...There isn't an 9.10 version of Ultimate Edition Even more confusing is why this topic is in the 1.9 thread.
Not to let you hang out to dry here, but you really should be asking in the karmic testing forums, and not here.

Remember karmic is in testing...very few have it installed and enjoy it.Just read their testing threads. ;)

Agreed. My original trouble started (in another post) with a failed installation of Ultimate Edition !.9, then a failed installation of versions 2.0 and 2.2. Through Moebius and Amir I discovered the problem was due to the Windows video drivers, which a problem which was fixed in the Alpha 9.10 of Ubuntu and the yet to be released 2.4 of Ultimate Edition. Moebius gave me the link to the Alpha 9.10 and I installed it as a work around till Ultimate Edition 2.4 presents itself on the grand stage of life.

That issue of installation being solved, and the connection issue taking over the discussion, I reworded the help request and moved my post perhaps I moved it to the wrong place. If so, I apologize. Please place it where you think it best fits.

The modem trouble I'm having now is not limited to any version of Ultimate Edition or Ubuntu. Any version I install presents the same trouble: The inability to connect directly through Network Manager. About 3 or 4 years ago, when I set this system up I had similar trouble... but didn't take notes on how it got fixed. As I'm discovering, this may simply be a problem with Japan or NTT modems and how it sets itself up.

Sorry causing confusion.
