Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

laptop overheating

Postby Shipwreck » Fri Apr 24, 2009 2:20 pm

I'm running Ultimate Edition 1.9 on a Dell Inspiron 8600, 1.7GHz, 500mb ram, and it seems to be getting very hot all the time. I'm not doing anything strenuous on it, just internet mostly. It's about 6 years old, so maybe it's just time I got a new one! Any ideas though would be greatly received!

I'm going to post a quote here for you from a previous question...I think if you can get to this link, it will help you out...I don't have a laptop, so I'm not that great with their problems, but from what I've read, the cpu sometimes does not throttle back??? any way
Looks like you have a whole bunch of issues with switching, so I'm going to post you a link(Ihaven't used it, but it says free trial) to O'Reilly books...the one I have and use is "Linux Desktop Pocket Guide" it has a whole section devoted to Laptops(I don't have 1) and many useful commands that can help you get going...use this site at your own risk, I haven't tried it...https://ssl.safaribooksonline.com/trial

Try installing 'powernowd' . Look in Synaptic Package Manager to install the pkg.

Hi saddletramp, thanks for that but already installed and no good. Also tried Kpowersave which doesn't seem to help either. Is there anything else I could try?

ps thanks Deate but didn't fancy trying the free trial thing! Maybe I'll just have to buy that book if nothing else works!

Ultimate is built on top of Ubuntu (which you prolly already knew)...and since Dell started selling "Ubuntu Laptops", there may be an updated driver on their support site that would help...just a thought ..
