Can't get sound out of TVcard (as-good-as solved)

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

Can't get sound out of TVcard (as-good-as solved)

Postby Uffe » Sun Nov 30, 2008 5:30 pm

I have a ASUS My Cinema P7131 Hybrid TV-card in my PC.
My MB is Asrock P4FSB1333-650 Bundled with a 2.66GHz cpu.
2Gb ram and 750Gb sata disc.
I run 64 bit. (Hope that's enough information about my hardware)

My PC has dual boot with XP (work related) and I tried to install the software for my TVcard in XP to see if the sound worked there and every thing works - though it takes time to start there.

In Ultimate Edition 1.9 I use TVtime. It starts very fast, good pictures and all channels found (cabelnet) but I can't get the sound to work. I've tryed every possible menu, contact and slider in ALSA with out any succes.

I've googled for hours but did not find any solution that work. One page sugested that one could write "dmesg" in the terminal to see what is wrong. I did that, and here is the the result

Hi Uffe. :)
Did you Google this one: http://ubuntuforums.org/showthread.php?t=778549

If your TV Card has an Audio Out Connection, as I've gotten Audio by connecting from that connection with a Jack to Jack cable, then plugged other end into the System Audio Input connection and then activated the Input Sound.

Re: Can't get sound out of TVcard

Postby Uffe » Tue Dec 02, 2008 11:55 am

Many thanks for the link, I haven't seen that one. I tried it and when the terminal is open along with TVtime I got sound - but it sounds like Mickey Mouse - and the terminal keep displaying new lines saying: underrun!!! (at least 12282301 48xxx,xxx ms long)
The x's symbols numbers that are constantly changing.
There must be something that have to be changed in this comand
Code: Select all
arecord -D hw:1,0 -r 32000 -c 2 -f S16_LE | aplay -D surround41

PS. There are no sound-out jack on the card, so I have to get the sound through the socket on the motherboard.

Your card may run on Myth TV. It is probably the best Linux has to offer. It is not easy to set up, but once you get it working it is quite good.

Myth is certainly not for me :? I just need to watch tv on this machine. After some more search I found this
Code: Select all
arecord -D hw:1,0 -r 32000 -c 2 -f S16_LE | play -q -c 2 -r 32000 -w -t wav - &

Then sound works but are a little bit delayed and only works until I close the terminal. Any way to remove the delay? And what do I do, so I don't have to write that command every time I want to watch TV?

EDIT 16/12: If I write "exit" instead of just close the terminal - sound will work, even if I close tvtime and start it again later, it will work until next boot and then I have to write the command again.

After some more search I have found that this also works and when it has run a while (a few mints) the sound is practically in full sync with the pictures.

Code: Select all
arecord -D hw:1,0 -c 2 -r 32000 -f S16_LE -t wav | aplay - &

Now I only need to find out how, or more specific, where to save it so I don't have to write that command every time I want to watch TV. :?:
Any suggestions ??

What are you using for sound, Onboard or an add-on card?
It might also be a plugin issue, have you installed the ubuntu restricted extras?
1st Box: Ultimate Edition 2.0 x64/ 1.8 x64
2nd Box: XP (dusty)
3rd Box: Stable Media box Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64 with XBMC

I'm using the Onbord sound, and yes, I have the "resticted extras".
What I'm wondering about is: That code I paste in the terminal, can that be saved in the boot or somewhere in TvTime, so that it works every time.

This is what i found about the code line, but it says noting about where to put it.

A bit more here, but I am not skilled enough ( yet - but hopefully in time........) so, please help me figure that last bit out.

I presume you have a TVtime launcher either on your desktop or your panel, have you tried to add that code to the launcher?
Right click on the TVtime launcher
select properties
if on the panel... add the code in the command box after TVtime
if on the desktop... select the launcher tab... add the code in the command box after TVtime
if that doesn't work like you want it, you can always create a new launcher and add that code to the command line. Sorry I don't remember how make a code start every boot, something about edit fstab is as far as I get.
