Synaptic upgrade of kernel or nvidia really screwed me.

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

Synaptic upgrade of kernel or nvidia really screwed me.

Postby brjoon1021 » Sun Oct 19, 2008 10:35 pm

ON reboot I have a completely unusable desktop with a resolution of 600x400 or so. I can't select any toolbar applications because of this, I can't access the menu because of this. Last time I just reinstalled, but not again. I know for certain that my last synaptic upgrade of upgradeable packages did put in place a newer kernel and it did update the nvidia drivers, should be the proprietary nvidia driver because I originally installed it with envy.

Can anyone help ?

& deselect 'backports' and 'proposed' from your software sources list for updates!!!! Your asking for trouble when you have this selected. Go to System>>Administration>>Software Sources>>Updates and make sure they are 'un-ticked' see below:

This problem was not spread to every-one. It didn't effect me what so ever. It did hit everyone with these selected though. This is not that bad of a deal - could have been a lot worse. Just be aware if you want the latest and greatest, sometimes it will reach out and bite ya ;)

Then I would go into envy and un-install your driver, reboot and then reinstall the driver and reboot again. This should fix your problem.

Or you could save yourself a few steps:
Once in recovery mode, select Start a root shell
and add this command to start Envy
Code: Select all
envyng -t

from there just reinstall your drivers and reboot.
