Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.9

Grub Setup

Postby genexxa27 » Sun Oct 12, 2008 1:05 am

Hi there,
I just put ultimate 1.9 64bit on my machine but i put it on a second hard drive that i got. I have the grub recognizing my other ubuntu on the first drive fine. Here is the interesting part i cant get my xp loader to work and when i use my vista loader it loads xp. Now i know what do ya need with 2 windows on it, i did it because i have programs that work in those environments better. My question is what did i do wrong that it makes my vista loader to load xp and the xp loader just to hang?
Here is my grub menu.lst to see what is going on:
Code: Select all

Re: Grub Setup

Postby DaddyX3 » Sun Oct 12, 2008 11:30 am

Hi there,
I just put ultimate 1.9 64bit on my machine but i put it on a second hard drive that i got.

OK, I was going back in to edit your grub file for you when I notices a error in your message above. You stated, "i cant get my xp loader to work" - then a few sentances later you state, "my vista loader to load xp and the xp loader just to hang?".

Do you see my confusion??? How do you get your XP loader to work, and then why does it hang?
-Also, you need to let me know which drives have which OS' s in them. I understand that by the looks of your xorg.conf file you have two different versions/ distributions of Ubuntu/Ultimate Edition on two seperate drives and it looks by from what you said, they both load correctly? So now the question is this-
1) your xorg.conf file shows that you have 2 Ubuntu kernels (-19 & -16) loaded on the same partition and hard-drive, can you load them both as they sit?
2) Do all three Ubuntu/Ultimate Edition kernels load correctly?
3) Is the XP install on the same physical disc as Ultimate Edition 1.9 or on the same disc as your other Ubuntu installs (-19 & -16) ??
4) Vista installed to the same disc as XP?
(XP must be on hd0,1 if your vista loader loads it)

I'm thinking that your xorg.conf file should look something like this, but without some definate answers, cant be sure.

I would suggest going with no more than 2 operating systems(i.e. Vista or XP and Ultimate). Have them both on the same drive. Install Windows first then Ultimate. You will save yourself a lot of headaches, believe me!! Windows does not like more than 4 partitons Linux I think is 64!!
Systems Windows XP Pro 32 bit & various Linux in Virtual Box and VMWare Player
Intel i7 2600K cpu with built in Intel 3000 video
1 OCZ Vertex 3 120 gig ssd(System)
1 Western Digital 2 Terabyte Green internal hard drive(Storage)
Kingston ddr3 1333 ram(4 gig)
MSI Z68A-GD80(G3)mobo w/hdmi video and optical audio
Realtek HD audio
Realtek lan
1 LG sata optical drive

I have Ubuntu Hardy on sda1 and vista on sda2. And i have xp on sdb1 and ultimate on sdb2. Both linux versions load no problems. Looking at your code in the what it should look like i think i have the problem lies in the chain loader designations +1 and +2. I believer that vista should be on hd0 and xp on hd1. Going to try to add the code to model what you have there
Thank you

Hey, dunno if you still needed/wanted help with your OS setup, but I have my laptop setup with Vista, XP, Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition 1.8 x86, and Ultimate Edition 1.9 x64.

A quick summary of how I set it up:
Laptop came with Vista pre-installed, I repartitioned the HD so it had a partition for XP, both Ultimate Edition's, a SWAP, and a partition for storing stuff on.
Installing XP causes the XP Boot Loader to disable the Vista Boot Loader, you have to have a Retail Vista disk in order to run the Boot Loader Repair feature.
Then installing both Ultimate Edition's, and installing GRUB with both of them, automatically added the Vista Boot Loader to the menu, which allows me to pick between either Ultimate Edition or Vista, and if I select the Vista boot loader, it then lets me pick between Vista or XP.

If you need help or take another stab at it, let me know and I'll be happy to help :-).
