Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.8

partitioning hdd

Postby nbigbox » Tue May 06, 2008 3:10 pm

i have a 250gb hd and am looking to install UE1.8 32bit when it is released :D
but i want to have two seperate partitions, one for the os to be installed on and the other for my files (i know how to do this)
by partitiong my hd like this i believe i can re-install/upgrade/change the distro without it affecting my user files (please correct me if i'm wrong)
so my question is.......
roughly how much space does an average install of Ultimate Edition 1.8 32 bit take up with room allowing an upgrade to a possible gamers edition (this way i know i will have enough room for my OS and future apps)
thankyou

Yes, having multiple partitions like that does allow you to upgrade/reinstall/change distro's or even OS's without it effecting your personal files, it's what I do on my computer. I run a 160Gig HD, with it cut up into a number of partitions, and I have 4 OS's installed, 2 XP, Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition 1.6, and Ultimate Edition 1.8, both of my Ultimate Edition partitions are roughly 30-40Gigs, with plenty of room to install and run whatever I want, so if you did a partition anywhere from 40-60Gigs, I can't imagine you'd ever run out of space, and even if you did, you can always expand the partition later :-).

A noob question here about partioning.....Please don't laugh to hard...

I will be installing 1.8 x64 in a couple of days.....

I have an 80GB drive for it which I have 1.7 x64 on now.

I want to set up a separate home partition with the new install, so I can upgrade to later versions without loosing my personal data. Can someone please hold my hand and walk me through what I need to do?

Thanks in advance..

Trust me, NO one is laughing here.. most of us have been through this before.. not once- but many times. Thats why being here is like being home, you are among friends who are willing to help at any time!

That being said.. I believe daddyx3 posted a how-to, try a search for that. Also, the tutorial I used (ok, so I'll spoon feed you a little ;) ) is HERE.
You can also find some other good stuff there as well.

Good luck and report back!

Also, if you do copy and paste from any tutorials, make sure that you CORRECTLY specify the HDD (and not leave it as the authors have it posted.)
Ask me how I learned that one...
