Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.8

new laptop advice

Postby ima » Fri May 02, 2008 10:47 pm

All this talk of x64 edition for 1.8 and such gets me thinking of getting a new laptop, right now mine is about 5 years old (1.5 Pentium M) but which brand is best for U.U. ? I've figured out nvidia over ati but other then that I have no idea of what to look for and what to avoid (wireless cards and such)

I've looked around and find alot on older machines but nothing really about brand new ones.

I figured I would go right to the source and ask you all what would work best.

I hate to say this but I am running an Acer...it was a bear to get a Linux to install..and in fact it was the newer kernel that was out that helped me install Hardy..so far haven't got the wireless to work yet..been trying now for over a month..before a put my foot in my mouth..Nvidia would be a choice of mine..Xp..would be the operating system I would chose..Vista is a hog..sorry Vista users..fact. My input ;)

EDIT: I should point out on the wireless issue 1.8 final is not out yet so cannot claim not being able to access a wireless connection.. ;)

Hello .. not downplaying the Acer..was stating a fact what was happening to me...comes with that particular set-up the 5520 has. As far as the wireless issue goes will advice all on the cure..1.8 may have it going right out of the box..wouldn't that be sweet? ;)

Everything works perfectly.....

Went down to the local big box and noticed alot of the HP/Compaq have Atheros Wi/Fi cards. A quick google shows that some of the older distros has problems with this card. Anyone here have this card and did you have problems? Also is there a big difference between the Dual 2 core Intel and the 64x AMDs ?

I like the looks of the HPs but U.U. workability is more important then looks.

I've looked at a few sites like that one but it seems like they are mostly older systems and of course they change model names every two weeks.

I guess my main concern is the wireless cards. I messed up my card on my laptop and had to reinstall everything to get it to work, so I'm afraid that if I get a card that doesn't work out of the box I'll be scre... in a pickle.
Plus for some reason I'm thinking some manufacturers are more linux friendlier than others. With money so tight I just want to spend it the wisest.
