If you add a printer to a system that did not have one, does it write a configuration in the X.Org file? And if so, and the printer is not configured correctly, do you then have to edit the X.Org file to get rid of it???

You manage the printers from system>administration>printing>new.
Then you might need a driver for it,here http://openprinting.org/printer_list.cgi or here http://www.turboprint.info/download.html in the end.
From there you remove the printer too. <BREW>

Yes sir, I know that...but something went wrong...I used the set up wizard, and selected the option for recommendations for drivers, and I believe there was something about configure x.org???can't remember. Then when I went to print test page....things got crazy!!!! it emptied the paper tray, printing 1 line on each page before I could get it stopped    Tried again, same results, this time I panicked, and unplugged the USB connection...now when I try to boot it hangs, and doesn't load OS...so I assume the x.org is messed up???
(That's with the printer re-connected) if I unplug the printer, everything loads as normal. I believe the problem may be how the configuration set-up went???

Did you try to delete the printer as I showed?Yes I think it can be how you set up the printer as a local host or network printer, and the driver might be not good set.
For my canon pixma ip1300 I found very hard a working driver, especially for 64bit.It didn't work even from here http://mambo.kuhp.kyoto-u.ac.jp/~takushi/#canon .
The ultimate choice is from turboprint but it's not free unfortunately. :(
