Ultimate Edition reports cpu as half speed after rebooting

Postby csc2ya » Wed Oct 29, 2008 8:06 pm

I'm running Ultimate Edition on my laptop which has a 1.6Ghz Intel Core 2 Duo (T5200) processor.

When I first startup or reboot my laptop, it reports the cpu speed as being half of what it should be:

irssi sysinfo script:

Code: Select all

If I do
Code: Select all
sudo /usr/bin/cpufreq-selector -f 1600000
in the terminal window, it then reports the full speed of 1600.000MHz.

It's then fine until I reboot.

Is there any way to get it to report the full speed after booting up/rebooting without having to run the frequency selector script every time?

ok, first of all do not panic, all will be well.

its reporting processor usage.

That being said, your processor and ubuntu, are talking to each other in that the kernel is scaling the frequency of the processor down to meet the demands of the operating system its processes and the user.

You don't want the processor throttling full speed 24/7 your battery life will be shortened and your lap will begin to get really warm.

if you would like to see the frequency of your processor scale up and down during everyday usage, simply right click on the top or bottom panel and select the frequency scaling applet.

Mines goes as low as 800MHZ -1.07GHZ-1.33GHZ then tops out at 1.7GHZ

one of those power management feature thingies.

If this doesn't clarify things a bit for you, then theres a hardware thingy in accessories that i will screen shot for you ( trying to beat strider to this post)

Personally, it doesn't matter to me whether it's going full speed or not, as it's run on mains power on a desk all the time, so that isn't a concern ;)

Strangely, i've never actually seen it go up when doing a cat /proc/cpuinfo

It's always at 800Mhz until I use the frequency scaling command to force it to 1.6Ghz, no matter how much stuff i've got running.

However, if I add the scaling app to the top bar, that does go up and down as I would expect.

Had to catch it when the Freq was up on the monitor to get the 1.733Ghz shot :)

with that being said,
Code: Select all
cat /proc/cpuinfo

will only give you a snapshot of the currently running frequency of your cpu cores

OH BTW dunno if you have it installed yet, but you can run 64 bit on the laptop quite nicely.

Try encoding a long video and then check it(hell try encoding 2 different videos with 2 different programs). This will use a lot of the processor and then see what it is doing. There is a service that may control your cpu speed. Try unchecking it and see what happens.

If I am not mistaken, I believe that csc2ya wants the cpu at full throttle all the time Idunno why.

I don't want it running full speed all the time if it doesn't need to, as obviously that would cause a lot of heat and shorten the life of things like my harddisk. I was just concerned that it wasn't working properly and not scaling up when it needed to (although I don't run a lot of processor intensive stuff on here...only two copies of irssi, rythmbox, and firefox.

Nice...I didn't kow it would run 64 bit, although i've seen it mentioned as 64 bit in an mirc sysinfo script before, so I did have an idea. I might have to download the 64 bit version once I can find my dvd's (would give me an excuse to upgrade to the latest version as well)
