Did you install your graphics driver? The one that is used when you first start up Ultimate Edition is not going to cut it. What have you done exactly before trying to run compiz. Details please.

This should tell you the state of yor graphics card(see picture). If you can't select the extra option then either your graphics card is not set up correctly or it is not fast enough. As you can see this graphics card does not cut the mustard(8 megs of video ram)!!

this is the output:
compiz (core) - Fatal: GLX_EXT_texture_from_pixmap is missing
compiz (core) - Error: Failed to manage screen: 0
compiz (core) - Fatal: No manageable screens found on display :0.0

it also kicks out emerald and awn, but if i logout and back in and then start each manually they all work fine. :?

Maybe someone could comment on this, as it might be an option. Try loading every thing you want to run...then check System> preferences> sessions...then select current running programs and make everything you want to run is running...then select the option "Session Options" and select "Automatically remember running applications" ???? I'm not sure of this...that's why I say maybe someone else can comment!!!
