Hope someone will jump in here soon...I still think this is a session "thing" Maybe you have to add these things(programs) to the "START UP" section of session preferences, so that when you log in, these programs launch automatically. If you go to System>Preferences>Sessions>Start Up and click "ADD" you get a pop up box that lets you add start up applications, I just don't know what the commands are to add your applications are???

pch - Here's the screen shot of my appearance preferences page .... you notice that none of these are selected. I do have compiz every time I start my computer. So this is a classic case of "this setting does nothing, the other setting does something" ... but where is the other setting - thats the question
Screenshot-Appearance Preferences.png

greg, what do you have set up in your compiz-config-settings? Have you selected any thing there? Do you even have it installed?
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install compizconfig-settings-manager

Then go in and setup compiz with:
Code: Select all
ccsm

If you've done all this, maybe you should go into synaptic package manager and do a search for compiz and reinstall everything there that is selected or try a 'fix broken packages' in 'File'.

Yes, that is the point. Why is it not starting by itself. Thats why I instructed to 'fix broken packages' and or install ccsm or at least set things up in there. Just ideas - boys.

@-pch. this is not the only time my appearance preferences have been jacked up  But, like I said, compiz and all effects work just like they should.... weird huh?

I guess the os decides what is best for your video card and this is just an tweak if you don't like the results.

What I DO care about and it makes me worry is that I see you're a bad boy that doesn't listen to mom, didn't she tell you "don't ever login to your linux as "root" user???"

Naughty boy!

Why is that. Are you going to hack into my system? I re-install operating systems constantly and I don't feel like sudo this sudo that. Hell, if I was worried about security I would stop using Windows!!!

I'm not going to hack anyone's system, calm down.

I just say that I've learnt that it's not recommended to use root as a normal user because you can screw things up, but if you bring up the fact that you re-install the system ANYWAY every few months, and that we don't forget the fact that you can totally wreck your system using sudo as well, then, you've got a point and I'm willing to reconsider...
