Ultimate Edition 1.8 installation problem

Postby k.k » Fri Aug 22, 2008 10:09 am

hi guys...

i'm having a problem with the ultimate edition 1.8 installation

everything goes just fine until gnome starts to load,

it gives me an error message :

"Your session has lasted less than 10 seconds, if you haven't logged out
yourself, then there might a problem with this installation or you are
running out of disk space. Try one of the failsafe sessions to fix the
problem."

and displays the login screen, counts down to log in with user "ubuntu" then gives the same error message again

i managed to start the session by logging in as user "ubuntu" with a blank password, but when i try to start the installation it gives the message:"there was an error starting this application, failed to execute child process "ubuquity"(input/output error)"

i pretty much tried everything to fix this, failsafe session, graphics safe mode, but still the same result

can anybody help me out with this

ps:i'm using a dell inspiron 6400 laptop,2 ghz core due processor,1gb ram,120gb hard drive,
k.k

Did you double check the Md5sum of your download, to make sure you got a good download?
Did you burn your DVD at 4x speed to make sure you burned a good disc?

If you answered yes to both those questions (No don't skip them, they are both the primary cause of bad installs) you might try a few things from Laptop installs in Newbie's Corner.
1st Box: Ultimate Edition 2.0 x64/ 1.8 x64
2nd Box: XP (dusty)
3rd Box: Stable Media box Ultimate Edition 1.8 x64 with XBMC

Yep. I agree with Leadfingers about that, Most login problems are due to a bad md5sum or a bad burn. Definitely, don't skip those steps for checking it. you can look in the FAQ section to see how to check an md5sum.

I've had installs that went flawlessly even though the Md5's didn't pair up; but I've never had a good burn when using anything faster than 4X (for a DVD). In fact, I usually just suck it up and burn at 2X, regardless of what the media says, just to be sure.

Burn at 2X, using known good media (Memorex, TDK, Maxell etc.) and you should be golden. This is no place for your $5 spindle of no-name media. I'd try this before re-downloading. 2X, 2X, 2X... Let this be your mantra.
I'm sorry, I can't hear you over the sound of how awesome I am...

If it's not broken, you haven't tweaked it enough.
