[Solved] Login password for Live DVD

Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.8

[Solved] Login password for Live DVD

Postby krimzonstarr » Wed Jul 30, 2008 4:30 pm

Firstly, I apologize if this is covered somewhere on the forum, I have been at a loss trying to find help. I currently have a non-working debian 4.0 Lenny install on my desktop, an AMD64 HP. Ubuntu worked fine when I ran it, but Debian is just too prone to breakage with my newbie-ness. I like the idea of Ultimate Ubuntu, so I have downloaded, burned, and checked the md5 of the Ultimate Ubuntu 1.8 64-bit DVD. My problem is no matter whether I use the main Install option or OEM install on the boot menu, I end up at a Log In screen.

This is where my problem starts. The login screen repeatedly counts down to an automatic login of "ubuntu," except it fails everytime. I have tried using my login/pw from debian, and they aren't right either. I haven't found any reference anywhere on the forums... but it seems my Live DVD wants a login that I don't have.

Any help would be greatly appreciated. Two free internets, compliment of Al Gore, for any help.

Howdy krimzon & Welcome to Ultimate Edition!! :D Did you not create a user and password (I think it's step 5) when you installed Ultimate Edition 1.8?? That would have been right after the partition manager ran for you to select how to install the partitions, then a screen came up asking for your name, login/user name, password (x2) computer name, then it proceeds to the next screen to show you where it will be installed to, and also an "Advanced" button down in bottom right corner, which allows you to either let it install Grub in the default location, or you can click on the drop-down bar and it will give you other locations to choose from. OR...are you saying that when booting up the "LiveDVD", it drops you into a login window from the DVD???

Sorry, but I think what is happening is that he/she is not able to even get to the desktop. I know that if you run OEM you still get a empty looking desktop before you, so I'm thinking that this is just a bad DVD burner and no matter how many times you try to burn it or check MD5SUM you will still see the same results. I have had this exact same thing happen to me and I know for a fact that it was nothing more than my burner making a boo-boo while it wrote the .iso to disk. I hate optical drives just for this reason! I've had brand new drives with barley any use on them go out on me for no reason at all. Heck, I've had drives go out on me when I didn't even use them before .... tell me that doesn't sound stupid!?!?!?!? I couldn't believe it :o :o Do you have another box laying around with a burner in it you could try? Once again, you never know if that one is dead also, but worth a shot.

Thanks for the replies folks.

Actually yeah, the problem is when trying to boot into the Live DVD. I don't even make it to the desktop, it immediately loads into the login screen, and root/root guest/guest aren't working. Maybe it is a bad burn, although I doubt that's the fault, when I have perfectly working DVD burns of Hardy and Lenny that were burned at the same time as Ultimate Edition.

I was really hoping to get my *nix skills up with debian, but HP has too many components in my box which make it a pain. RT61 wifi card, ATI video, just rather have the ease of Ubuntu with all the hot rodness of Ultimate Edition. Unless anyone has any other suggestions, I think I am going to retry my burn.

Sounds like a bad burn to me..you will not get a login screen with Ultimate Edition on a live DVD..same with Ubuntu..you should go directly to desktop after loading completes.. :|

If I understand correctly, you DON'T get to the screen to "Start or Install Ultimate Edition"????

If you do get to that screen, you can pass boot parameters that might allow you to go to the next step in the process. The times that a linux CD drops me to the command prompt login instead of a GUI, it's been because of a video issue.....

OK...the question still is "What is the very first screen you see after the DVD starts up??" The reason I say this is because you say "Actually yeah, the problem is when trying to boot into the Live DVD. I don't even make it to the desktop, it immediately loads into the login screen, etc...". That can be taken that you're starting from the 'Installation' screen..and you said in your first post "My problem is no matter whether I use the main Install option or OEM install on the boot menu etc..." So if you're at the 'Installation' screen (i.e. boot menu), then there's a couple of things we can try from there BEFORE you proceed any further than THAT screen...

Ok, after being away a short while, I return to a lot of replies.
I can get to the installation menu on the Live DVD, and can select whether to run Installation or OEM Install etc... After selecting Install or OEM option, the DVD loads to the GUI login that resembles the gnome login on ubuntu only much flashier.

To tell you the truth, I think I am just going to download a new copy, checksum it again, burn it, and then checksum the burn. Maybe if I am absolutely certain there is no problem there, my problems will be solved.

That, and I just bought a new laptop and Vista is killing me. So, looks like I'll be working on two install this weekend. :) Both 64-bit, so that cuts down some of the burns lol. Thanks for all the replies folks, I'll post back on this thread once I get some results.

Ok krimzon, hope it all works out for ya this time...but if ya still have the same prob on the system we've been workin' on here, since we know you can get to the Install menu, there's a couple of things you can do that may get you around the problem, or at the least, we'll get you to where you can see the bootup process going on on the DVD and look where the errors are...anyway, Good Luck with the new burn and both the installations <BREW> <BREW> :D 8-)
