Ultimate Edition x86_64 vs Ultimate Edition x86_32 w/Server Kernel on a 64bit machine

Postby binskipy2u » Sat Jul 26, 2008 9:21 pm

I find my scanner, printer, and a few of my fav programs wont work*even with the force install command* on 64bit, I can do with out them, and reboot go into VIsta to use'em, thats not a bad thing, but I installed 32bit ubuntu 8.04.1 proper w/ultimatix script 32bit and added the server kernel to see all my ram.. and it sees every lil bit of it.. and i have all codecs to see /enjoy ALL media(unlike 64bit codecs which are lacking for the most part ) my question is.. am i truely missing anything important, program/performance/bootup, etc etc by using a 32bit w/server kernel vs 64bit?
if so, what is it, and is there anyone else using the server kernel 32bit on your 64bit hardware w/4+ gigs ram? and do you notice anything lacking from NOT using the 64bit edition/ version of Ultimate Edition and/or Ubuntu itself?
thanks

Hello-
I'm not going to be very helpful here, but can only give you the 'norm'. I would have to say that performance wise using desktop programs and using it like a normal PC user would ... your not going to be missing much in the way of performance. As far as utilizing the server side of things, I couldn't be of any help. Sorry for the lack of knowledge/ help.

The server kernel is designed for machines without any of the extras... Servers.
So the modules needed to run most of the peripherals aren't included, many things won't work until you add the modules for those devices.

Google... Ubuntu Hardy Device name modules
to find out what you need.
Synaptic should install it for you.
