oohh boy.... I think i really screwed something up. first some background...i have a dual boot system with XP and Ubuntu 8.04. So, i booted the live CD and to me it made sense that i could run the little app called upgrade since i was already using
hardy....well, after that was done, i rebooted back to ubuntu and it was not changed at all. so im thinking oh no, it wrote all this to my XP drive...well i try to boot XP and it fails.. It says that <windows root>\system32\ntoskrnl.exe is missing or corrupt and to reinstall it. So, i get out the xp install cd and type "expand d:\i386\ntoskrnl.ex_ c:\system32" it asks for confirmation that i want to overwrite that file and i choose yes. im thinking oh thank god...no good, same thing happens again....missing or corrupted kernal file again...how bad did i screw myself here?

Hey Guys, I am new to this, really enjoyed both the Ulimate Edtions 32 & 64 bit but can't seem to find the download for 1.8 Gamers.

Could someone please help regarding this, I have made copies of both the 32 & 64 Bit for friends and they are really impressed.

Cheers

First, as you know now from experience, You don't don't do the upgrade script from a live session -you know what happens when you do that ;) Now to repair it..... ???? Have you tried to use a "SuperGrub" disk to retrieve your XP? Look HERE for
info on it. You could also edit your GRUB by hand (not as hard as you think ;))Hope you get back up and going.

well it turns out that doing that from livecd didnt cause the problem. I had to reinstall windows and then reinstall ubuntu and then I got the same error....so im guessing maybe grub has messed something up...im still tryong to fix this, (or again i should say). So if anyone knows why this is happening, i could really use some more input=)

Howdy Shady & Welcome to Ultimate Edition! 8-) Exactly how are you installing?? XP first then Ultimate Edition?? on the same drive, on separate drives?? When installing Ultimate Edition and you get to the partition step, are you selecting auto, guided, manual or what??

Thank you for the Welcome! Besides the trouble I am having, I am absolutely loving this Ultimate Edition.

now lets get to answering those questions..
Exactly how are you installing??I have XP on the first drive, and then load Ubuntu on the 2nd drive.
When installing Ultimate Edition and you get to the partition step, are you selecting auto, guided, manual or what?? I was using guided:entire drive.
System specs i have added to my signature for ease.

and because i loe you guys already i am giving you my outputs for a fdisk-l and what my grub file looks like.

ok, so for an update, DaddyX3, thank you for the link to th Super Grub Disk, that at least allows me to boot into Windows directly from the cd i made from it. and when i tell it to fix my windows boot, it does but then the ability to lad linux goes bye bye...so then i tell it to fix grub and back to where to where I started lol. So it seems i can have one or the other but not the best of both worlds unless i boot from the grub cd. I hope this is enough information now, I do try to Aim to please =)

You're quite welcome!:)

IMO that's the best choice

I indicated above in red, seems you've got 2 boot drives (sda1 & sdb1) going on...that's a no-no I believe...so when you're installing Ultimate Edition, are you choosing where to boot from and changing the default?? (I didn't put the *there, just changed the color)

I did not change the defaults on anything, I did notice that as well but did not know enough to know if that is what was causing the issue. sda1 is the windows boot partition, and sda2 (on a separate drive) is the boot partition for linux.
