Help & support for Ultimate Edition 1.8

Yes, you are correct in that installing 1.7 then doing an upgrade to 1.8 would have to be a "last ditch effort"! I don't know if anyone has successfully pulled it off, without a serious amount of head-ache.
I would have to say, that maybe you should do a little research into your lap-tops and BIOS. There are quite a few manufactures out there that have specially built BIOS that will either "hide" setup options all together, or at least have an option that you need to change in order to even install a OS on it. I have a buddy with a Dell that had this exact problem. I found that by doing a little research I was able to get his computer to have a new OS installed on it.
-so long, long story short, look around on google and do some studying on your particular lap-tops and bios settings. You might find something.

Too cool, thanks so much. Yes zero did a great job on the 1.7 theme. The 1.8 is nice too but 1.7 just smokes it.

No. just the 32 since I'm sure it's not 64 bit. I've given up on it for now I'll just settle for a different theme on the laptop. Thanks anyway.

Hi.. i am having the same trouble, on a toshiba tecra a3x. I have tried different timezones, but nothing works. i can use 8.04, i am running it now, but when i try installing ultimate. i get the same problem as described earlier in the thread. sometimes the live dvd wont boot properly, and all i get is either icons and no bar, the bar and no icons, and sometimes just the wallpaper, at first it seemed like a memory issue, but with 512 mb and memtest all ok thats that idea out. its a shame cos i got addicted to linux with ultimate 1.6 and lookin forward to 1.8.

lookin forward to any ideas.. lol . i'll keep trying and if i get anywhere i'll let ya's know.

i think i am going to try 1.7, as i have just spent most of the night trying everything i could think of and find to get 1.8 installed, but nothing has worked. oh and if anyone is wondering thee mahn made the 32 and 64 bit versions by hand, i read it in the intro. i have a question though, 1.7 is based on 7.10 gutsy, would the upgrade to 8.01 hardy be painless, or would i have the same trouble as i have been recently having? guess i should try anyway.

a quick note for thee mahn (if he reads this)

thankyou so much for all your hard work you obviously put into the ultimate editions, they are by far the best distros i have come across (i have a pile 10 inches high of linux distro cd/dvd's lol). in my opinion you deserve a medal of service!! if i could big u up enough i would.. lol

I know this may sound redundant..have you tried reburning the 1.8 iso again?
I am kind of leaning to your optical device not reading your DVD correctly or possible bad burn even though it checks out OK.
Something that I came across and does not happen often, cleaned the DVD even though it looked fine and it worked...food for thought.. :|

Edit: Sorry I missed this also, if you can get the plain vanilla Hardy 8.4 installed you might look into Ultamatix when it becomes final if has not already..another TheeMahn's work "Build your own" OS...

Sorry to be jumping in here and picking up such an old thread
But I thought I might be able to shed some light on why your install went wrong.

You need more Ram

I know the install disc says that the minimum requirement is 384Mb but for some unknown reason Ultimate Edition doesn't like to install on most laptops without at least 768Mb of Ram.
Yes other OS's install just fine with less memory, but not Ultimate Edition.
Yes it will install on your desktop with less memory also, but for some unknown reason most laptops need more Ram.

Don't know why.
