Turn off all your BIOS power management settings! It sounds like your SONY and Ultimate Edition are playing tug-o-war with power management. This is (or "has") been a prob with *nix and BIOS for quite some time, especially with lap-tops. No Joke - turn them off before installing. Also, keep your lap-top plugged in.

Now that you mention it, i remember when i tried to install fedora 8 on my laptop that i had to turn off acpi.
There was a command that you typed and then you choose to install it.

Howdy pirate, at the end of the kernal line that you're booting into, add: noacpi

In order here we go.

Q. "Just out of curiosity, did or have you had any other Ultimate Edition installed on the lap..?"
A. No. No ultimate versions yet. It is running Hardy 32 bit with no issues and XP Home SP3.

Q. "I will ask was the laptop recently used as in does it work fine in windows of any flavor?
A. I think I just answered that one. It is running Hardy 32 bit with no issues and XP Home SP3.

Q. and do you have any pmcia cards installed? sometimes you have to take it down to bare things but once installed you can run usb devices etc.. just fine"
A. I have the pmcia card removed for the install. Power line Ethernet cable and usb mouse is all that has been plugged in when trying to install and we just found out a few posts ago that having the usb mouse unplugged and using the touch pad resulted in it crashing at the very same point.

An idea. "Turn off all your BIOS power management settings! It sounds like your SONY and Ultimate Edition are playing tug-o-war with power management. This is (or "has") been a prob with *nix and BIOS for quite some time, especially with lap-tops. No Joke - turn them off before installing. Also, keep your lap-top plugged in."
Reply. Now this I haven't tried, I'll give it a try.

As another note, I downloaded the Ultimate 1.7 (Gnome) liveDVD and went thru the installer all they way to manual partitioning at which point I canceled the install.

I like the theme on the 1.7. Can anyone tell me if or where I can find it on the DVD so I can save it and install it on the 1.8 once I get 1.8 installed?

Also if I end up installing one of the 1.7 versions first then upgrading it to the 1.8 version which one would I be best off using for the initial install?
(Gnome) or the Gnome KDE blended?
Or would doing it that way create even more problems?
This would basically be my last ditch effort. I would much prefer a clean 1.8 install.

I'll try the "Turn off all your BIOS power management settings!" Idea first.

The only thing in the BIOS that looked anything near being any help was changing the mouse from "Simultaneous" To "Exclusive". There really are no power management options that I can change.
I think my desktop has more power options in the BIOS than the laptop does.

I tried it with it set to mouse "Exclusive", the usb mouse unplugged using the touch pad and it still crashed at the same point, as soon as I click on forward after selecting any time zone ( step 2) the installer vanishes.

Tried that too. Hit F6 and added noacpi to the end of the command string. Same thing, installer crashes.

ok ya'll, I'm gonna take a complete shot in the dark here so ya might wanna listen for the gunfire & duck!! ;)

When I've installed Ultimate (or Ubuntu too for that matter), it always came up in 640x480. On install, I couldn't see any of the buttons at the bottom of any of the install windows...so I ended up having to tab thru, and on occasion, would accidentally tab to "cancel" instead of "continue" (or "forward" if that's what it said)...is any of this ringing a bell with either one of ya'll ???

Yeah I know where to get 1.7. Thanks anyway. I already have the 1.7 (Gnome) liveDVD that's how I know it made it past the spot that 1.8's installer keeps crashing. The question was:
If I end up installing one of the 1.7 versions first then upgrading it to the 1.8 version which one would I be best off using for the initial install?
(Gnome) or the (Gnome & KDE) liveDVD?
Or would doing it that way create even more problems?
This would basically be my last ditch effort. I would much prefer a clean 1.8 install.

LOL, I know what you mean. Had that problem with wine in 7.10 Gutsy when I set the widow size too small when setting it up. However this is not the case. The installer window is clearly visible and no confusion between the cancel and forward buttons.
