Having the exact same issue here and I tried the OEM method as well. :(

Sony Vaio PCG-FXA48
Dual booting XP and Ubuntu 8.04 Hardy
512 RAM
Mobilty Rage video

Also after the installer fails and I try to shut down the live dvd it clears all the icons and desktop but doesn't shut the pc down it just hangs there with the wall paper.

No I didn't have any install issues installing Hardy 8.04 on the Sony Vaio PCG-FXA48. It went smooth as could be.
I'm using it right now, mater of fact.

That's what I don't understand.

Thanks for the quick response.

I just finished installing the 64 bit version on the desktop with no issues and had to say I'm loving it so far. I really, really want this on my laptop the Sony Vaio PCG-FXA48 now.

Surely someone has a solution to the installer crashing right after selecting the time zone on the 32 bit live DVD.

The DVD's both checked out with md5sum and the burns verified successfully in k3b.

Have you tried a different time zone and then try to install..the time zone can be changed after install...I have installed 32 bit on three different machine including a laptop which would not install any other Linux Distro..except Hardy
