Delete the disk image of Ultimate Edition 3.4 by mistake

Postby killaed » Wed Feb 12, 2014 9:00 pm

Hello there!
Last November I messed up real bad :fulmine-2010 and I need some help guys. I had U.E 3.4 dual boot on my laptop and because I had two different image generic numbers - or kernel number - on start up, I tried to delete the old one with "apt-get remove --purge linux-image-generic" but unfortunately I delete the whole disk image of Ultimate Edition 3.4 by mistake. :angry My laptop wont start no linux at all, it shows me just this :downthere then windows starts.
"Windows Vista (loader) (on /dev/sda1)"
"Memory test (memtest 86+)"
"Memory test (memtest86+, serialconsole 115200)"

I tried to fix it myself but no success. :vil2_reflechir ...I said no success because I don't want to re-install Ultimate Edition 3.4 and not be able to recover all my bookmarks I had on Firefox.
Is there any way I could get access to these data ( firefox bookmarks, pics and videos) back them up in a usb stick, then proceed to a reinstallation??????????...
please help!
BTW I tried the U.E 3.8 live CD. it looks excellent to me. I plan to give it a try. GREAT JOB on it!!!!!... Hats down!

Take the USB and make an installer with it instead of the DVD and make sure you give it some save space.

Then insert the USB and run the live OS installer.

Open up a file manager and navigate to the partition that 3.4 is stored on, go to home/.mozilla/firefox/q2l51o82.default/ and copy the bookmarkbackups folder. Herein lies your bookmarks, you can open with editor and reassign, or there is a chance you could just write over the folder in your new install.(may be a problem if version changes moved, etc..)

I ummm, don't know where you keep your pics and videos lol, maybe in pictures and video?...anywho, you can grab what you need here while you are at it, or move it to the Windows partition.

I like to have a separate FAT32 partition to store stuff I will use in both Windows and Ultimate Edition, also I use Chrome, so Firefox is a little different but I use their sync function to store my bookmarks and settings across computers and installs.

Boot Ultimate Edition 3.4 from a live USB / DVD and run the tool Boot Repair. Under System > Administration > Boot Repair
Home of Ultimate Edition. Got a question? Please review the F.A.Q. Browse the How to section.

I did boot from the live dvd of Ultimate Edition 3.4 but can't find no Boot Repair. Her's what I found under Applications > System Tools > Administration > BootUp-Manager.
I ran BootUp-Manager but I can't find what could fix the problem.

I am somewhat unsure how I would go about recovering the image with either of those options afforded but since it isn't running on the mounted partition(since it won't mount through windows) there is a chance that you could recover manually since it shouldn't have been overwritten.
http://www.linuxforu.com/2011/09/recove ... -in-linux/

but I did find this for restoring a linux kernel which I think would be better

http://askubuntu.com/questions/28099/ho ... ll-kernels

I must inquire however..

How would one go about recovery with the other options provided? Like specifically, as a process.

Thank you guys for the tip.I did the grub customizer and I saved it after it showed me all active partition. I rebooted it, remofed the live CD but it didn't work. I re-did the grub and checked all partition. Now I wonder if I should ge a follow-through automatically, I don't want to reboot again to see it not working. I don't know if I should proceed to install to MBR (see screenshot "grub4"). I don't want to overwrite the whole thing.
I'd like some advice on what the next step.
Because I selected /dev/sda6 / ext4 to mount (see screenshot 1) and I checked all boxes on screenshot 3, I don't want to to do it wrong and mess up the process.
I'll reboot it to see if it's working, if so I'll inform you guys to mark it SOLVED.

After rebooting I found 3 Windows Vista on /dev/sda1 and no Ultimate Edition. I went again on grub custmizer and unchecked some (see screenshot grub5) :downthere
