3.5.1 questions (Solved)

Postby chris47 » Sun Oct 06, 2013 7:26 pm

Since I have had trouble getting grub to recognize my win7 os which was installed on a seperate physical drive. I decide to redo everything and but win7 and Ultimate Edition 3.5.1 on the same physical drive win7 first. Now I partitioned the 2Tb drive into 3 seperate, and installed 3.5.1 on the third partition.. It went well, but grub still does not recognize my win7 os. I tried os-prober again, and get nothing. What can I do to get these two systems to work together, whichout me having to keep on going into bios and choosing my win7 bootloader as a option. Plus the language pack fails everytime I try to update it. Thanks.

Where are you installing Grub to?
Really it should have been no problem. I would grab a copy of Rescatux and have it look for and repair Grub.

After manually setting up my partition for Ultimate Edition I just hit install, and off it went.. Was there a particular place for the grub loader to be? How do you install that software you mentioned in Ultimate Edition.

Ok I think I finally found out my problem with grub.. I found a excellent guide on how to manually set up win7 dual boot enviorment.. What the problem apperas to be is, in the setup disk process, 3.5.1 recognizes my 2tb hd, but it doesn't recognize it has a windows installation, in this case win7. I set it up by the quide it installed correctly, but still grub will not list win7 naturally as it shows a ntfs file system in the begining during set up but does not show it as being win7 vista etc... Unless there is a simple solution, I will probably go back to 3.4 which recognized win7 until the new 3.6 arrives..

Okay, how about trying this:
Code: Select all
sudo os-prober

I get this:
Code: Select all
ryanvade@ryan-linux-laptop:~$ sudo os-prober
[sudo] password for ryanvade:
/dev/sda1:Windows 7 (loader):Windows:chain
/dev/sda2:Windows Recovery Environment (loader):Windows1:chain

Definitely use os-prober

However, during install you are looking at 2 different things. Where it says ntfs..THAT IS WINDOWS. It is a partition editor/manager, not a bootloader, it does not care specifically what you have installed, the ntfs partitions are what matters.

The option on where to install Grub is directly below the partition area during setup.

However

You could have just ran
http://www.supergrubdisk.org/rescatux/

and went on with your day.

Yesterday when I clicked on that link, it refuesd to open.. Today I will try before I change anything.. 3.5.1 run fine, just want it to recognize win7 so I do not need to keep on going into bios to change it around.

That still doesn't work for me for some reason.
