Can't load 3.5.1

Postby chris47 » Thu Jul 11, 2013 4:22 am

Well after much excitement, I have installed 3.5.1 and have nothing but issues. First after initial install and boot, it brings me to nothing but a black monitor. Next I tried to run recovery mode and nothing see picture.. Next I reinstalled it and had the same exact issue.. I had not issues with 3.5 installed no problem.. I used firefox for browser during download.. Any suggestions

Thanks for the reply. Umm I don't see how my bios is almost 10yrs old since this MB used in the pc was purchased last December and has the latest bios See picture. Second I have tried your suggestions and other than recovery mode memtest86 and windows loader there is no other option to boot into a previous kernel unless you mean were it says previous version right under the recovery option it so I will try it again... When I hold the shift button down on the key board it brings up the same grub loader I see when booting up normally.. Plus I run to hd on this machine the first is my 2TB and it has my windows installation, and my 150Gb which holds only my Linux version.

Ok this is strange. I post two pictures so you can see what I'm talking about.. The first is my current grub loader with my win7 loader. This is the one were I can't seem to load what I thought was 3.5.1. The second one is listed as previous version on the first, but it is the one which has 3.5.1 and it booted no problem.. What is weird is the kernel for 3.5.1 Is older than the one in the first picture.. So my question would be how to get 3.5.1 to show up on the same grub as my win7 and get rid of the one not needed... The second picture is the one with the trouble loader it is a bit blurry It would say Ultimate Edition with linux 3.8.0-26-generic. The one with 3.5.1 that boots up fine is Ultimate Edition with Linux 3.8.0-25-generic..

The newest BIOS for your MB is 1708, which is going to help when compared to the current 1101.

Reading the output, I saw CPU not recognized. What kernel are you using?
Did you check the MD5SUM of the download before installing?

* I see kernel 3.8.. I cant read the other picture.

His Mobo is newer then that though...At least according to his specs. That date is from the latest EDD.

EDD does not work with default GRUB2 loader. EDD requires real mode (16 bit) and GRUB2 by default is using protected mode (32 bit) when starting Linux. In protected mode Linux expects bootloader to supply EDD information.

Try booting with
Code: Select all
edd=on nolapic

And update the BIOS. ;) I gave you the link.

Just a passing thought chris47 but where did you put the boot loader during installation?

What happens if you choose the boot menu from the bios screen when the machine first starts and select the 150mb to boot from?

I had this exact same issue, turns out somehow, do not know how, but the default kernel version listed was 3.8.-26 when it should have been 3.8-25. all i did to fix was boot into previous version from the selection instead of the default, it booted perfectly in Ultimate Edition. after I was in i used the tool in Ultimate Edition (forgot the name) to remove the -26 kernel and made -25 default. I originally reinstalled like 4 times and 2 of the times the default kernel was 3.9! and would not boot, by stroke of luck i went into previous versions and booted right in. Not sure why this happened but it all worked out in the end lol.

I put the boot loader on the same drive as the OS, I did the easy installation. Here is what I ended up doing, I did a compete wipe and nuke of both harddrives, as I was unsuccessful in restoring my windows 7 Os which became all jacked up.. After that I reinstalled 3.5.1 and ended up with the same exact situation, and this time I did not even install Win7 at all. I had the grub loader and still had the same problem when it was complete it gave me the same types of errors as seen in the pictures above.. I had to go to previous Linux version, for 3.5.1 to load.. No I have re-wiped the HD and for the time being just installed Win7.

Here is my question. When I go to reinstall Ultimate edition again, how do I set it up so I can use the windows loader instead of the grub loader. Grub seems to be to much B.S and I don't want to go through this hassle again...

Make sure to use the Advanced partitioner during the installation and choose the root partition as the location for grub. Once that is done download and install EasyBCD on Windows 7 and use it to modify the Windows boot loader.

OR, you can install grub normally and then use EasyBCD to chain load from the Windows boot loader to grub. Then in the BIOS set the default boot HDD to the windows HDD. Either way GRUB has to be installed, either MBR or Partition.
