Desktop Enviorment issues

Postby chris47 » Mon Jun 10, 2013 8:26 am

I have noticed that when logging into some of the different DE, that all I get is a background and nothing else.. To log out I have to ctrl, alt, delete.. Also most do not have any desktop wall paper. My KDE DE works fine for the most part..

Gnome 3...does not work. You will get a blank screen and a cursor. You can call up terminal, you can run some things...but no.

Cinnamon...Cinnamon is.............., this is like having a Windows XP install go horribly wrong. When it works. It does not work on 3.4 or 3.5 as far as I know.

3.5 is really for KDE

KDE-Feel The Vibe :)

, what it is, is a fully packed KDE. On it's own merit, if this was just a KDE distro, it would be pretty amazing. KDE however, when this Distro was released, was at version 4.8 in the 12.04 Ubuntu repos, with 4.9 in backports at the time, but did not quite make the cut. Timing....I think if there were 4.9 under the hood here, it would run much smoother. The 3.5 I am responding with is at 4.10.3, and my 13.10 Ubuntu KDE is at 4.10.4. KDE is a lot to learn....so

XFCE is not set up. This is not hard. XFCE is very flexible, so really, you can go wherever you want with this.

LXDE is kind of like XFCE in this regard.

Gnome Classic. This works pretty well, make sure you do not have the unity checked on Compiz. I usually remove Unity.

Unity..I usually remove Unity. It works, but when I am working with Unity, I am very specific with it, as far as set-up, I remove lots and lots of things, it is easier for me to drop here.

XBMC...XBMC is pretty sweet, I don't really think of it as a desktop, more as an advanced multi-hardware media player. It's cool, check it out.

Thanks. ya I tried Cinnamon and is the only other besides KDE and Gnome classic that works.. I'm on GNOME Classic now... I enjoy this site, as it is a wealth of information. This has been the longest I could stand having a Ubuntu based OS on my computer. LOL.. Thanks again, you have been very helpful.. I tried running 3.4 like I had in the past but can't get it to work well with my current Video card Nvidia GTX 550 ti. Before I had to put in a old video card, then update drives once 3.4 was installed, then but back in my newest card.. Since I sold the old card I could not even run the installation. I tried safe graphics mode, but was getting all kinds of distortion on the set up screen and there was nothing I could do to get it to respond.. With this new card, safe graphics mode worked and was able to install with no problems. .

Prove it..I want screens...Cinnamon Panel always drops. XFCE and LXDE work. I have yet to see someone set Cinnamon up. If you want to cheat..go ahead..alt f2-->cinnamon --replace, or terminal..

Here is LXDE on 3.5

In sessions, it is Lubuntu
Here is XFCE on 3.5

This is XFCE, and Xubuntu in Sessions.

I'm logged into cinnamon now..Not doubting what your saying. Plus lately my KDE desktop freeze when loged in. I can't do anything after say 5 minutes..

That is my cinnamon desktop. Fixe KDE freeze issue, just disabled desktop effects. found having it enabled along with compiz makes it freeze.. So far about 15 minutes with no freeze..

Idk...maybe Cinnamon just need like..6gb RAM or something to work.. Maybe stick with it and see if it suits you.

I don't know how many ways I can politely say that KDE 4.8.5 sucks. But that's if you know how to use it. I have no idea what you are doing in KDE, last I checked you said you were running compiz? That would be a reason for it to stop working right there.

All the versions of Ultimate Edition that are "new" at the moment are based on 12.04 Ubuntu LTS. This includes 3.4, 3.5, and 3.4 Lite.

One way or the other..anything can be done here.

So let's try this another way..what is it that you want out of Linux? What are you trying to do?

First for the freeze, I had desktop effects enabled along with compiz as well.. I think one was conflicting with the other.. Kinda like my phone, I custom theme it all the time, and when things don't work right I trouble shoot... As far as what I want to do with linux, well simple, learn to get away from windows LOL
