dist-upgrade killed my system!

Postby gnsmithandy » Wed May 01, 2013 5:46 pm

Please help. When I select Firefox or Thunderbird, my system tray goes away. I have tried resizing my screen, scouring the forums for a solution, altf1, control F-2, Escape, and I cannot get them back. All updates are installed, and the only upgrade I did was sudo apt-get dist-upgrade. I want to upgrade to Ultimate Edition 3.5, but there seem to be too many issues. I did, however, have a gerat experience with BlackOpal 32bit edition. I want to reinstall it, but 3.4 keeps locking me out, because I cannot exit without logging out, or a total restart. :( help.please?

I'm not sure how 3.4 is "locking you out".

I do know that you can not go from Ultimate Edition 3.4 to 3.5 via apt-get dist-upgrade.

Ultimate Edition 3.4 is based off of Ubuntu 12.04 LTS. When you run dist-upgrade, you are bringing it not to Ultimate Edition 3.5, but to Ubuntu 12.04.2. If you ran it again, it would go to12.10. If you ran it after that you would get to 13.04. To get to 3.5 you have to download and install Ultimate Edition 3.5.

Generally the idea is if it isn't broke, don't fix it, but you can run upgrade/dist-upgrade if you feel so inclined. There are a few things to consider first.

Did you back everything up?

Do you know what apt-get update, apt-get upgrade, and apt-get dist-upgrade do?

Do you know where and what your sources are?

Are you prepared to re-install?

Do you like reading endless pages of forums regarding a single bug that may not prove to be of any use whatsoever to you?

Now that we've cleared all that up..what environment are you in?

And now, the completely true facts, as told by an anonymous man hiding behind a screen name:

Packard Bell Pack Mate II 286 Intel 80286 1MB RAM

You technically cannot upgrade Ultimate Edition.

So dont run 'sudo apt-get dist-upgrade'..

Simple answer-- Download Ultimate Edition 3.5 and install it.

Yes Ultimate Edition 3.4 is 12.04 based but Ultimate Edition 3.5(also is 12.04) is a full finished product.
