Desktop Environment issues!!!

Postby Tool » Tue Apr 23, 2013 3:32 pm

Hi, I'm Tool. Hehe

I just installed Ultimate Edition 3.4 64 bit. Only 2 desktops are working which are Gnome classic and Ubuntu 2D. The others will start and some even show the home folders, but the top bar and the side bar for Ubuntu do not show making it unusable for me as I can't access any apps or web. I have done updates already.
Any help would be appreciated as I really wanna use the Cinnamon desktop. Thanks. <BREW>

First be sure to not run the usual apt-get update && apt-get upgrade, or in update-manager, do not upgrade. Update the repos for current software, but do not do a full on upgrade, only upgrade to work with whatever applications/software that you you need updated or is not working. Running a full upgrade can be a disaster. Definitely do not dist-upgrade, or "new version is available" in the update manager

Just to let you know, I am not ignoring your query, I generally remove Cinnamon. I could probably make it work, but it will take a minute, and someone else may have a quicker solution.

Ok, thanks. I'm a little confused about the update part though. Am I not to do any updates after install? Because I did already did 2 updates through the package manager right after install. I believe the first one was an apt-get update though as I like to update immediately and not wait for the update manager right after a fresh install.

Apt-get update to your heart's content. Do not upgrade.

There isn't really a first and second. apt-get update updates your sources. apt-get upgrade upgrades your software/applications, etc.. apt-get dist-upgrade changes your OS.

So in update manager, what I like to do, is press the close window button.

Then I open a terminal

Code: Select all
sudo apt-get update

Ok. Thank you very much. I believe I need to re-install then as I might very well have also done upgrade via Terminal and I did do an update via package manager

Do I check the download updates and third party software box during installation then?

Hi Tool,
Welcome to Ultimate Edition forums.

Like Xanayoshi said, Only run 'apt-get update'.
It will help you to install from repos on the net.
As far as Cinnamon is concerned, its still not in a very good state. Try your luck.

If you are getting a broken desktop, with panels missing etc...try and install nvidia proprietary drivers for your card from their website.(Its also available
in the PPA). Check the How-to section of forum on installing..
Nouveau is good but if its no luck, then go with the official drivers.

Thank you. Do I have to black list the Nouveau drivers when I install the Nvidia ones? I'm not 100% sure of my download either. I just learned what that md5? checksum is and that purpose while reading these forums. When installing this time I did not check the 2 boxes to "update while installing" and "install third party software" I ran an apt-get update after install and just ran through it's thing, but didn't update anything. My update manager was going insane popping up every few seconds and said I needed over 900 updates totaling just under a GB. I ran a partial update just for giggles to see if it would work. It added about 40 packages or so for the update and added Cinnamon 2D and another one, but still only Ubuntu and Gnome classic runs. Is there a way I can do the checksum on the disc it's burnt on? I saw how to do it for the downloaded one.
