Hullo to everybody, i am facing a problem since yesterday. To be more specific, when i open my lap top and login i see that the gui (gnome) just freezes. But when i switch to terminal (ctrl+alt+ F1) the computer seems to work. My question is what has caused this and how do i fix it ?

Is this 3.4 or 3.4 lite? If it is 3.4 and you are referencing the Gnome session specifically and not Gnome Classic I have bad news, I have never seen it work, but I am thinking it was never supposed to. When you install Gnome Classic, aka, Gnome Fallback, Gnome Panel, you automatically get Gnome session in your DM even though it doesn't do anything. For example, if I am running Debian on my raspberry pi, and I want to install gnome-classic, I do this via apt-get install gnome-control-center. I will have the gnome option on my sessions list but there is no way that it would run, I simply did not install it, and if I had, there is no way it would run!! I too, have never gotten anything but terminal up to exit that screen.

It' s 3.4 Ultimate Edition (not lite), and to be more specific when i log in it shows in the top menu bar both the icons of gnome and ubuntu-unity panel, gnome panel being shown as backround and unity as foreground. Now my question is whether can it be fixed or re-installing the Ultimate Edition be necessary.

Hi Bazrider,
Welcome to Ultimate Edition forum.
I'd recommend you download and install Ultimate Edition 3.5 OR Ultimate Edition 3.4 Lite.
Ultimate Edition 3.4 is buggy but curable by user. As a newcomer you may face problems with it.
So please if you can download Ultimate Edition 3.5 which has tons of packages or Ultimate Edition 3.4 lite which is solid as a rock but with few programs installed.
Your choice...

Enjoy !

You could remove Unity, there is also a picture describing that exact same issue.

http://forumubuntusoftware.info/viewtopic.php?f=125&t=8920

You can always just toggle the compiz fusion box and turn compiz off. Metacity will most likely not have those issues, but no effects:(

Pam is right though, the easiest route would be to use 3.4 lite, it's not really lite by lite standards, it is lite by Ultimate Edition standards.

The base is Mate but there is more custom options like Gnome 2.
