cannot find the file, edit, effects, menus in audacity

So I can't seem to access the file, edit, effects, menus in audacity. Are they hidden? Special keystroke to activate them?

Alt+F brings down the File menu. In a terminal look at the output when you start audacity:
If so this could be an error with globalmenu. Probably not, but.....

What is the file-type you are trying to open?
Is it mp3, mp4 etc..
When the dialog opens up to ask you for file you want to open, there will be an option somewhere, where it'll ask you the file type extension you want to
open, either way choose 'all types' and then click OK to work on it.
If you are not able to do anything with the file, its mean the format(file-type) is incompatible with audacity.
Most used formats are compatible with audacity.
You can further dig for info on the internet or audacity and/or if you can import an addon to maybe run a file...
