(Solved)Help Me Take Ownership of HD

Postby boarder428 » Wed Mar 27, 2013 11:22 pm

I added a second HD to my pc and formatted it with gparted but I cannot copy anything to it. I assume I don't have the correct permissons to do so. I formatted it ext 4, there is also a lost and found folder on it that I cannot delete. The HD previously had a copy of Windows Xp on it. Would someone be willing to walk me thru the process as I'm not to familiar with doing so in Linux?

Is this USB or Sata?

Would you please post your hardware specs in your signature?

Just open terminal and login as root with sudo -s. Then type nautilus or whatever file browser you like to use. when it opens choose hard drive and back up one directory with up arrow in file manager. then select the hard drive folder, right click and open properties. Under permissioms tab change owner and group to your username then close. unmount then remount and youll be all set...

Thanks Micro, it did'nt quite work like that, or I could'nt figure it out! After opening Nautilus I could not see the other harddrive for some reason. After going thru the "places" menu and looking at the properties for the HD I noticed it was mounted as /media so by doing nautilus /media I was able to get it done and now it is showing the HD in Nautilus aswell an I can copy files to it but it won't allow me to rename it. I would like to name it something other than eb784d17-cd79-4344-a3e5-a83302a7d3cb

Yes thats the mount point. Great job! Open gparted and selet hard drive on top right. Then right click on device in middle pane and select label. Name it what u like and your all set. Please make sure to edit the subject of your first post and append (Solved) to it. Keep on hacking your getting the hang of it... 8-) If the drive is internal you can creat a mount point in your home folder and have it automount on bootup. But thats another subject. We are here if u need us...

boarder428,
if you are using Ultimate Edition, there is a program ..disk utility or you run from terminal:
Code: Select all
palimpsest

once open go to the disk you want and click on 'edit filesystem label' to change the name of your disk..

WARNING: just be careful palimpsest is a very powerful tool and can erase your root partition or filesystem if by mistake you click format or try to do
something similar.

I'm going to assume you want me to post harderware specs for the pc in question, is there a good program in Linux tthat will list my spec's? I have at least 8 Pc's, most dual booting a version of windows and a version of linux, some using Wubi, some using Grub. to list them all in a signature would be fairly time consuming. The Pc I am aquiring about is running Ultimate Edition 3.4 and that is it! It is a HP Pavilion DV7 Notebook.

I suppose just put your most commonly used PC specs where it says semilinux noob, what this does is help narrow down any issues you may have and give a broader idea of what may be going wrong. It is a great help to the moderators and admin, especially those who are more hardware oriented. Some issues can be caused because of what you are using, for example, a motherboard with uefi. Knowing that this could be causing an issue, it would narrow down the list of suspects.

Thank you :D
