Upgrade Questions/Error

Postby Tib » Fri Nov 30, 2007 9:49 pm

Hey, not sure exactly where I should post, but here goes.
I DLed Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition 1.4 about a month ago, and it's insane, it's amazing, it's...it's...well, breath-taking :P. Then I found out that 1.4 wasn't the latest version, so I've been trying to figure out how to upgrade/install all the new stuff that's been added since 1.4, as well as upgrade to Ubuntu 7.10. I ran the Upgrade program from the desktop, but I have no idea what all that upgraded (was it only 1.4 stuff? or does that access and DL all the latest stuff for Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition?), when running it, it listed three different distro options, Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition, UU, and Custom; I wasn't sure which to run, so I ran the Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition and it DLed and installed a bunch of games and whatnot. After doing that, and not being sure if I'd gotten just 1.4 upgrades, or all the latest ones, I moved on to upgrade Ubuntu from 7.04 to 7.10. I first ran the update manager and got all the updates it had, and then I clicked the Upgrade To 7.10 button, but after it checks the repo and whatnot, an error pops up and doesn't let me continue, the message reads:
http://uu.enarel.eu/dists/feisty/all/bi ... ackages.gz: 404 Not Found

So I guess my questions are as follows:
1. Is the "Gamers Edition" just all the games that come with it, plus the upgrade script on the desktop? And does it upgrade to the latest games in the repo, or just for 1.4?
2. When running the upgrade script, what are the differences between the three "distro upgrade" options?
3. Is there anyway to get around that error when upgrading to 7.10, so that I can upgrade to Gusty?

EDIT: I'm DLing the iso for Ubuntu 7.10, is it safe/will it work to upgrade Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition from Feisty to Gusty using a disk for the standard 7.10?

Thanks! :-).

I believe that it will not allow you to upgrade to the 7.10 just yet, or if it does I could not verify that it works correctly. I know that the upgrade script to Ultimate Edition 1.6 from 1.4 or 1.5 is not complete yet and TheeMahn is working on it. He's run into a few snags along the way with rights issues with connical. As far as the different options in the upgrade script in 1.4 ... they do as they say - gamers = games , Ultimate Edition just installs the additional packages in TheeMahns repository (not sure if the repository listed in 1.4 is the same as the one for 1.5 or 1.6 - I would guess that 1.5 would be the same due to the Feisty base). Maybe TheeMahn will chime in with a few more details if he has time. The differences between the distro's are on the original UbuntuSoftware site HERE. hope this helps ;)

Ahhhh, alright cool beans, thanks :-). I edited my first post right as you were posting, so dunno if you saw the added question or not, but, to add to my added question, is it also possible to DL Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition 1.6, and then upgrade all three parts from it? the Games part, the Ultimate Edition software in the repo part, and the core Ubuntu from 7.04 to 7.10?
If it is possible to do that from a Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition 1.6 disk, do you know of a torrent for it, cause the mirrors keep crapping out on me.

Thanks! :-).

I know for a fact that TheeMahn has not yet completed the Ultimate Edition 1.6 Gamers version yet. He is working on it as we speak (well, to be exact, he was working on it as of this morning). So, 1.6 Gamers is not going to be available yet even with the 1.6 disk and upgrade.
Going from 7.04 to 7.10 is not something I would recommend at this time. I think jfg69 tried that and had a little mishap  I will end by saying this ...1.6Gamers is not official yet.
EDIT: I'll have to point out that TheeMahn has some usefull info on his 1.6 link on the web-site HERE.

Ahhh, so 1.6 is sorta done, but not the 1.6 gamers part to go with it? (did I read that page right?), and I'm guessing he's making 1.6 based on Feisty, and doing a script that will update it to 7.10 (along with updating 1.4 and 1.5 to 1.6?). So I guess I just kick back and wait for him to finish 1.6 + 1.6UGE + upgrade script for pre-1.6? Sounds like quite a task >_>.

1.6 is Gusty 7.10, but he is still in the works (as of yesterday) on getting the Gamers all dialed in :D Yes, it does seem like quite the task doesn't it. TheeMahn is one of the most giving persons I've come across. Have a good one ;)

Re: Upgrade Questions/Error

Is there going to be any way, once he's done, for me to upgrade Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition so that I'm running all the 1.4, 1.5, and 1.6 Ultimate Edition software + Gamers Edition games + 7.10 Gusty - Without wiping my partition and doing a fresh install of 1.6 Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition? or am I stuck with 7.04 Feisty without doing a fresh install of 1.6?
There's two main things that I'm worried about, first, I really don't want to lose all the settings and whatnot that I've set so far, and second, I run a tri-boot HD (XP, Fedora Core 8, Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition), so I have no idea what wiping Ubuntu Ultimate Gamers Edition and doing a fresh install would do to the booting process....and I read on one of the pages that Ultimate Edition 1.6 doesn't have Gnome? *tear*.

Well, ideally - the upgrade script will be dialed in a way that just a click of the button will get you the upgrade without loosing your setting (where possible). If you had to wipe it clean and do a fresh install, I see no reason that you would have problems with your GRUB (for your tri-boot :D ). It will re-write your GRUB upon install and all should be found and correctly configured :D Just do a little researching around this site and learn a little about partitioning and where your other OS's are located and on what partitions - you will be fine. But that's a worse case scenario ... I would just hang tight and let TheeMahn do his magic ;) It'll happen sooner than you think.

Well, I know where all the OS's are installed and how the partitions are done, cause I did it myself, so if push comes to shove, I can fix whatever might happen, I just spent a week or so getting it this far, and rendering both Linux and XP unbootable the first attempt :-P. I guess my settings aren't that big of a deal...if I lose them, eh, it'll suck, but I can redo them.
Something which I'm a tad confused on, is, will 1.6 have everything that 1.4 and 1.5 have? or is there anything which will be left out, like GNOME, etc.
Thanks again for the help :-P, can't wait for 1.6 to be finalized! woohoo!

Yes there are some things left out of 1.6 at this time. GNOME is NOT one of them, but KDE,-E-KDE, Windowmaker and some others are not there. I don't ever use them anyway (just my personal pref.) I'm sure they will arrive eventually, but GNOME is all there and happy :D As far a detailed list is concerned of the differences you might check the Ububntusoftware site.
