Hardware please! I know my hardware is a bit older and have not found a way to configure the BIOS to look for USB devicesx first, but that might be a good place to start. restart your computer, go into your BIOS and see if the boot device priority would allow you to start from your iPod.

When you start your computer, before you get an OS screen, you should get a screen that tells you how to get into the settings. Usually you have to hit an "F" key, or delete to enter into the BIOS screen.

Hi geordiejohn, I don't know if you just want your music or all your files from your ipod. I was having same problems with my mp3 player. Turns out no drivers for it; even in win7.(only a little over a year old). My older one it could read and play but would not synch, so after closing program it was gone; unless I reloaded it. I had to go into windows and download it, then access files from U.E.side. Once there I copied music folder and distributed it to the programs I wanted. Also copied music folder to music folder, so now it's on Ultimate Edition side and I can manipulate it how I want. I know it's not plug and play:but; you'll have your access. geordie try software center downloads I know they have codecs and specific programs just for ipods for mounting, extraction;and playing ect. good luck WitchyWays
