n00b needs help with printer installation [Solved]

Postby Gwarnokyon » Sun May 02, 2010 10:46 pm

To everyone here:

I am running (to the best of my knowledge) the latest version of Ultimate Edition, although the computer is telling me that I am running Ubuntu Release 9.10 (Karmic)...... color me really confused.. But on the the question.

My wife purchased a Canon iP2600 printer for her college courses. (Now before I go on, I have scoured the internet looking for sites to tell me how to do what I am trying to do.) I located the cnijfilter-common_2.90-1_i386.deb AND cnijfilter-ip2600series_2.90-1_i386.deb files..

I have the files on the desktop. I opened Terminal and input: sudo aa-complain cupsd
So far so good!

Then as the numerous sites say, I then input: sudo dpkg -i cnijfilter-common_2.90-1_i386.deb

I hit enter and I got this error message:

[sudo] password for gwarnokyon:
dpkg: error processing cnijfilter-common_2.90-1_i386.deb (--install):
cannot access archive: No such file or directory
Errors were encountered while processing:
cnijfilter-common_2.90-1_i386.deb
gwarnokyon@gwarnokyon-desktop:~$

I even found a site that one can try adding the 'force-architecture' command...

My wife is very close to forcing me to put Windows back on the computer. I'd rather not do that...

I humbly ask you all for help!!!!

Thank you all!

Hello, From what I can tell from a google search is that your printer has been around since 2008. Usually Ultimate Edition will detect a USB attached printer shortly after you turn it on. Also did you try going to the System/Administration/printing You should get a window with the title Printer configuration - local host, select new and see if it finds your printer and then you can select the printer drivers if it is supported by linux.

Hi Gwarnokyon,
Welcome to Ultimate Edition Central.
I Agree with dathems initial comments.
As these files are both .deb files, try simply double clicking on them. That should start the installer for you automatically.
Try that and tell us what happens please.

If your version of Ultimate Edition is showing as 9.10, you are not running the latest. The latest is based on 10.04. Are you running 32bit or 64bit?

Cheers.

I tried to just double-click the .deb files. I have a screenshot here that sums it all up..

In a terminal, try the following code:
Code: Select all
sudo apt-get install libcupsys2

Then try double clicking the .deb files again.

Good luck.

I Thank you for all of your help and support!

I typed it in. This is what came up in terminal:

gwarnokyon@gwarnokyon-desktop:~$ sudo apt-get install libcupsys2
Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Package libcupsys2 is a virtual package provided by:
libcups2 1.4.1-5ubuntu2.4
You should explicitly select one to install.
E: Package libcupsys2 has no installation candidate
gwarnokyon@gwarnokyon-desktop:~$

After that, I double-clicked the .deb file and it came up with the same errors....

Found the following:

In Ubuntu 9.10 Karmic libcupsys2 is actually renamed to libcups2 so when trying to install with:

sudo apt-get install libcupsys2

will result in:

Reading package lists... Done
Building dependency tree
Reading state information... Done
Note, selecting libcups2 instead of libcupsys2
libcups2 is already the newest version.

What you need is to install a transitional package including the names for the libcupsys2.

For example this: libcupsys2_1.3.9-17ubuntu3.1_all.deb

You can get it from here:
http://packages.ubuntu.com/jaunty/all/l ... 2/download

It worked like a breeze for me.

Sorry for the terse reply, at work at moment with very little time. :D

I don't know how, I also don't know why.....

I Dloaded the transitional package including the names for the libcupsys2 from the link that you sent. I ran it right away, but I was getting the same errors. I had to do the: sudo app-get install -f again.

I tried the link again...... it worked!
I did the first .deb thing......IT WORKED!!!
I did the second .deb thing.......IT WORKED!!!!

I tried to print a 'test print'...... nope.. didn't go!

Remembering what Windows often suggests, I rebooted..

Tried the 'Test Print' again....
IT WORKS! IT'S ALIVE!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Thank you! Thank you! Thank you!!!!

My wife also says, 'Thank You!!!!'
