i posted this, i guess i need to know can i yank the hdd out of that box put it in mine, install the os then move it back? will the os update itself or will it just crash? you used to be able to do this with windows a long time ago. i guess if not then what about my other options?

You should be able too....I've done this.

The main thing is the graphics driver.If its set up for a certain gpu,and you move the drive to another box with a different gpu you have a very good chance of x not working.I deal with this by uninstalling all graphic driver,and using the generic gpu driver...vesa,or mesa driver.
